Just brought this home from my LHS today. Lionel 1931460, 2019 catalog. It was displayed on the shelf but never run. On the track and after setting the ID and engine info, everything fired up as it should, except for sounds. All lights, throttle control, direction change, electrocoupler, smoke, whistle steam and water scoop effects just fine. But no chuffing except for the odd time a few consecutive chuffs, then nothing - no pattern and not switch related. No whistle sound (even though the whistle steam effect was instantly triggered and was impressive), no crew talk, bell or other sounds.

I read on another post over the weekend, a suggestion from RickO, to try conductive oil. A tiny drop on both sides of the two tender pick-up rollers and, to my surprise, all sounds started up and had no problem for over an hour of continuous running afterwards.

First question - could such a simple drop of oil make that big a difference? The second question pertains to a background static hum from the tender. It is not very noticeable while running at speed, but at a crawl or stopped, it is annoying. Could there be a similarly simple fix for this?

With thanks for any advice, Bob.

Sounds like the the infrared sensor on the drawbar was not correctly aligned and the tender wasn’t receiving instructions. After you oiled it and put it back on the track it was.  That’s just a guess.   I would need to see a video to comment on your noise issue

on another note if the pick up rollers have a lot of slop/play, adding a drop of oil helps with electrical pickup. Especially if it’s conductive oil

Thanks Gary. In retrospect, I think you might be right. When I put the tender back on the tracks after oiling, I did note that the tender and engine drawbars were better seated than before - only a 1/4" difference,  and I didn't think it was significant. But maybe that's all it needs to be in or out of alignment. Lesson learned!

The rollers were not at all sloppy and moved freely before the oiling. And yes, it was Excelle brand of conductive penetrating oil for model railroads.

Tomorrow, I will try my iPhone and see if I can get an audio of the hum.

Bob
