Lately I had been sort of dissatisfied with my layout. I was really into the classic Lionel industrial look when I built it but over the years I have developed more of an interest in realistic settings and towns. Seeing all the custom scenery accents and structures at York was the final straw, and I ripped all the accessories off the layout to start fresh. The idea was to add more scenery and realism to the outer Gargraves portion of the layout, and incorporate my late mother's huge Department 56 Village collection into the inner tubular portion. The advantages of using the Department 56 buildings were I didn't have to buy anything, they create the town setting I like more, and at the same time they're not too permanent; they can be taken right back up when the time comes to move out of the big house in a year or two. And of course, they bring back cherished memories of mom setting up the Snow Village every Christmas on that little snow-covered table next to the tree. Her collection was big enough that it seemed like the same building was never used twice each year. My layout is large enough to fit them all now.

Still a few things left to be done and spaces left to be filled with structures in the switch yard, but the revamp is more or less completed. I am far more happy with this than the previous setup. I didn't mind too much before, but now I definitely dread the day where this all has to come back down.

Haha, what I used to do was compose the thread there, then copy and paste the entire thing into the thread creator here. However, now that the forum has a new photo coding system without the [IMG] things, I have to take the time to make both threads separately. I completely procrastinated putting the thread here, but tonight I finally got off my lazy butt and did it

Nick,  it really looks nice!  I especially like the effect of the median in the new town section with the potted shrubbery and ornate streetlights. The added memory of your Mom is something you will always cherish.

We started a section of our layout with the ceramic buildings after I acquired a Ford Dealership and Crackerbarrel in a collection. My wife loves the look of the ceramic pieces and they are beginning to appeal to me too!

For the roads I used tar paper cut to size, and thicker rubber hobby road material for the portion that goes over the tracks. Only downside is you really can't have any pets in the same room or else all the fur will stick to the surface. A while back I had to move my bird out of the room because the whole road system was spotted with molted feather wisps.

Eddie, yeah that's probably not how real boxcars were unloaded, but that figure and truck were all I had until I create something more prototypical like forklifts on a loading/unloading dock.

I've been unable to work on trains since mid-May with a trip to NY and recently driving up to the university for an exam. After getting home earlier tonight I had enough juice left for one project that had been nagging at me - Eliminating that obnoxious orange color on the floodlight towers. Krylon Metallics "Dull Aluminum" did the job nicely:

The oddly brown track-end bumpers got the treatment too:

Lighting all this stuff will be the next order of business. Night shots would be really nice.

After further research encouraged by other forum members I found a much more prototypical setup for the track bumpers. Lionel's older style from the MPC era painted with Krylon Fusion Gloss Burgundy nicely replicates a real "Hayes" freight yard bumper. The ones I had previously installed were weathered and put with the rest of the yard refuse:

Also added scale MTH signals to the town's main crossing. Been after these for a good price for a while now. My LHS had them for a whopping $60 each, but I got them for $15 each from another forum member. They look great:
