I picked up a sd40t-2 6-28540 it has an interesting issue. no sound no smoke and no rear lights. what could the issue be ? I was thinking it might be a part of a MU rear engine facing backwards that would turn the sound off and the rear light. and if whoever had it before didn't run smoke in the MU wouldn't that turn the smoke unit off also. explaining all the issue's ? Once it get here this week Ill know more just looking to see if I am correct this could be the issue.

Question is are all the boards intact inside?
This could have been a parts donor...
I just got a couple of engines for repair that were missing the electronics. They poor guy bought them and didn't know...
Check that the switches for smoke and sound are on located on the bottom of the train.
Then switch to program and perform a reset. Assign an ID.(Manual available at Lionel)
Power off, switch to run.
Then test.
If no joy, go inside and reseat the boards and check the harness connectors.
Test again.
That's the easy stuff. I hope your lucky on this one.
Word to the wise when your buying engines from trainyard on ebay ask him if all the boards are in the engine.. Yes he has good deals but it's not worth it if the boards are gone..
I looked at it this way 189 to the door. if it needs all new boards I'm still at about 300 so I should be good. funny when I checked the shipping it comes out of New Baltimore Michigan I grew up there right next to chesterfield where lionel was I'm going to use it for a MU anyways so shouldn't be a big issue.
Yea I didn't mind either but getting a sound board for a vision line engine was a pain in the rear end. Never again.
sound board is missing tonight I will see what else is it does run I programmed it and it ran good
Since this is RS4, you can pick up a sound board pretty cheap. Are both boards missing, or just the audio board? I have a number of diesel boards, drop me an email and maybe we can fix you up.
Did you figure out the smoke? That engine has a smoke regulator, a very common failure item.
I didn't take it apart yet. the box said it was missing the sound board. so I will find out later tonight
plugged smoke unit in and added fluid works good
Well, if it's just a sound board, that's not too bad.
soundboard and rear light there doesn't seem to be any fixture to hold a light either. but I can live with no rear light for now. the smoke unit has a small gasket from the funnel to the shell I need to make one to replace it .it was torn and half on. good looking engine tho ran it as a MU with the sd90. looked great but found an issue tonight also. I put in the tie between the two levels of my layout and not I don't think I have enough power. lights dim when running a train even more when running 2 lights in the engines by the way.
one section of the layout if I blow the horn I get a quick horn blow then a clicking sound.
Time for more power drops.
For the rear light, it's pretty easy to just hot-glue a light (or two) into the headlight spot. It should be easy to get that working. I like to replace the bulbs with LED's for better lighting anyway.
