My local hobby shop is trying to fix a ps 3 steam engine, the sound is garbled when the train is running but works perfectly when the engine is not moving, any ideas. I wonder if it could be a power supply problem. the sound is not garbled when the engine is not in motion. trying to help out my hobby shop. is there any probability that the super-cap is defective,or a power supply filter that can't keep up with the added current draw when the engine is running!maybe even a bad regulator on the board? The ITEM NUMBER IS 30-1610-1

Ive' read on some threads that the repair rate of fixing these ps3 boards do not have a good track record for being not able to be repaired!

Had a steam loco with PS2 board in loco and speaker in tender.  Caused by a problem in the tether plug or connections to the loco tether socket.

Make sure that wires are correctly soldered to the speaker connections, and the wires from the speaker coil are soldered to the speaker contacts.

Is the engine still under warranty? If so, I would send it back to MTH. I Have the same engine I bought back in march. Just got it back from MTH for a new PS-3 board that let the smoke out.

This doesn't pertain to your problem but, I would inspect the tender coupler and make sure the plastic insulator is installed like the one in this picture. Mine was turned around and smoked the PS-3 board in reverse on a lash up after uncoupling some cars. The solder tabs shorted to the axle.

Sent you an e-mail.  Since PS-3 I would start by swapping a new Boiler board after inspecting all the wiring and draw bar connection.  Some sort of interference, though I have not seen wiring do that to sound.  So I suspect the boiler board has issues and is dragging down 5V on the tender board causing garbled sounds.  But if under warranty I would send it in also.   G

No, the PS-3 still has a 5V regulator.  There are still micro control chips on the board that run at 5VDC.  The processor maybe 3.3VDC or less.  If so a buck circuit or another Power Supply regulator for the processor may be on the board.

The PS-2 3V has two regulators on it.  One is 5VDC on the power supply board and the other is 3.3V on the processor board.  The 5V feeds the chips needing 5V plus markers and smoke fan, the motor relay, and the input to the 3.3VDC power supply.  As far as I can figure the 3.3VDC power supply only feeds the 2 main processors and maybe the memory chip.   G

What part do you need?  The internal PS-3 boards are standard, rollers and tires can be identified by sight?  Cosmetic stuff is a call or e-mail to MTH.

Are you fixing this for the shop or is the shop tech?  IF the shop has a tech is he an MTH ASC graduate?  If not, why not?

If you need the board, your going to have to have a ASC tech order it.   G

No George im not repairing the steam engine just trying to  help my hobby shop with trouble shooting. my parts question  was about me trying to  have midge find the 10 pin steam engine 30-1195-1 challenger boiler connector that you George gave me the part number for.. midge says that connector is no longer available, and she was trying to  find one that she found out was a little bigger then the one ag0000061 , that number she came up with was AG0000039, this number is .2 mm bigger!
