Hi. I have a friend that I am sending to the forum to ask his own questions, but now am curious. He has his Father-in-laws, early 40s AF set, He had it serviced professionally, but can't get it to run, He is using the original transformer and was told the unit is DC and needs something between the transfrmer and the track. My original thought was to get a new transformer, but having heard it is DC, I was hesitant about whatever else, I didn't now. I think he post, but wouldn't mind a quick lesson, if someone has the time.

Replacement wheels are available for this common problem.  This has even happen recently with MTH wheels on their standard gauge trains

I picked up my replacement wheels from Fred's train parts.  However Fred Jester recently past away.  I have heard that friends or relatives will be set up at a pre TCA train show at York PA this April.  I will be attending both this pre train show and the TCA show so I may have more information on availability of these wheels.  Let me know what he needs and I  will be happy to purchase and send them to him if I can find them.  You can e-mail me directly at keyhole_corona@yahoo.com with your needs.  Note that is keyhole_corona the underscore does not show properly when the full e-mail address is shown.

IMHO, before you pass on any information to the owner of these trains, you should find out exactly what he has.

In my experience folks commonly over estimate the age of their trains. I cannot count the number of times people swore that their trans were acquired years before the item was made.

I am not too familar with American Flyer, but I believe that they did make some DC powered "S" gauge trains in the 1950's. Maybe your friend has these.
