          Street Details

This week I am departing from the usual discussions, and writing about detailing the world for our model cars.

My biggest pet peeve is the lack of O scale sized working 1930s –1950s street lamps. To my delight I came across these on e-bay. They use a 3 volt LED, and if you send them a note when ordering, they will send dropping resistors. They are sold by a Chinese company named “Wehonest” I just love that name. I’ve ordered items from them before and have always been satisfied. They are priced at 10 for $14.99 including shipping from China.

Next, Woodlands Scenics announced N, HO & O scale street lamps as part of their plug-in series. They haven’t announced a date or pricing yet but take a look

While you are lighting your streets, you may want to add a few lighted automobiles on your streets. I would like to mention Custom Lighted Diecast by Bill Lowe. Bill works out of his home and dose many of the shows in western New York. His work is excellent and prices are reasonable.

Great Lakes Models has photo etched man hole covers and sewer grates

Usually on the light posts are mounted bus stops, no parking and traffic signs.
I design them with CorelDraw then print them out on photo paper. Super glue them on light and utility poles or for free standing signs, on music wire.
Don’t forget to add fire hydrants mailboxes, parking meters and fire call boxes.new-3

Here are some 1950s street signs. You should be able to copy them and print them out.

Nice stuff. If I modeled any  type of town (instead of the extremely rural area I do model), I'd be making orders for all that stuff right now. Too many people want to focus everything on the 'transition era' but they often forget that infrastructure would go back many years or decades. That means plenty of pre-war things all over the place.

Nice use of yellow stop signs. So many people forget that they weren't red all along. I've been toying around with making one with scale 'cat eye' reflectors, using tiny marker light lenses laid out in a pattern to look something like this when I'm done:

But even in O scale, it's very tiny work...
