“The Adventures of Tintin”

The Belgian Foundation, Herge-Moulinsart, the copyright holders of “The Adventures of Tintin” markets collectibles. Among the collectibles are 1/43 die cast automobiles. These are cars from some of their story lines. Many are European, but there are some American and all have Tintin figures inside. They have some unusual models and the quality is generally good but not outstanding. Most have been discontinued and many are hard to find with corresponding high prices.

A little quiz for the O Scale Vehicle thread, can anyone identify the cars in this pic?  Hopefully the pics are fuzzy enough to make it a challenge.

These three are the latest additions. For two of these the wait has been a year plus.  Like my train roster additions, my die cast/cast acquisitions have taper off since I now have almost everything I want.

Mike Wolf drew me back into O-Gauge in the late eighties with his MTH products and products made for Lionel under contract with Richard Kughn.  At that time it was hard to find correct street vehicles, or so it seemed.  Found a few around Christmas in toy departments of small department type stores.   So pick up as many as I could at around $4/5 each.  Set 4/5 bucks as price limit.  Then found some at 10/15 bucks so my price scale slid up, etc, etc, etc.  Then found Asheville DieCast, Diecast Direct, and eBay.  My price limits were more than tested to the breaking point.  Like for anything else “you get what you paid for.”  One item in the above pick is the most expensive so far.

The left-brain in me will not tolerate child like lack of detail replicas.  Although can see these for a kids layout and/or those just starting out.

Guess this was too easy!

On the left is the 1939 Delahaye Type 165 Cabriolet, more specifically the 1939 NY World's Fair car.  A great complement to a PRR S1.  Albeit the S1 wore a moniker of American Railroads (if recall correct) at the Fair.

In the center is what is billed as the 1952 Chrysler SS.  But to me actually is a 1953 Chrysler (Ghia) Thomas Special or Ghia Chrysler New Yorker "Thomas Special."  The 52 was built on a shorten frame where as the 53 was built on a full sided New Yorker frame.  The wheel base on the model scales to 125.5-inches the size of a New Yorker.

The right most is a 1956/58 Dual-Ghia.  The neat thing is that the top pulls off, so top up or top down.

Here's my latest acquisition. This is from Rextoys' series of famous or notorious people riding in Rextoys cars. This one is the notorious Italian porn star/member of Parliament La Cicciolina riding in a pink '38 Caddy with Pope Pius XII. The Pope is actually from a different set where he is riding in the back of a limo, but some previous owner moved the figure into the care with Ciccio. She was elected to Parliament in 1987 as a member of the Radical Party. She was also married for a while to the well-known American artist Jeff Koons. I don't know which other people are featured in Rextoys classic cars, but there is one with FDR in the back of a very long open Cadillac, and I think a few more as well. Rextoys also made a series of Rolls-Royce Phantoms belonging to various members of the nobility, including different cars for Queen Elizabeth before and after she assumed the throne, but I don't think those had figures.

Who is trying to convert who (this IS a convertible, after all)?

Can't say I have seen Rextoys with figures.  Walking through a show today I picked up

a Richard O'Brien book, "Collecting Toy Cars & Trucks",  This thing is as big as a phone

book, but I have only found an outdated, very, listing of Brooklin as anything O scale

(with scale given)...most else gives no scale, not even Matchbox....but I just scanned it.  Scales are all over the map, from Buddy L pressed steel and pedal cars down to tiny.  I don't see any of the current 1/43rd makers I have seen on here, excepting

Brooklin, Ertl, and Matchbox.  Somewhere a few years ago I did see a soft cover

book on 1/43rd diecast, but did not acquire it.

Reference book-wise, I have "American Wheels" a written reference to all diecast and handbuilt 1:43 car models made since the 1980s by Jerry Rettig. I think this is now in the fourth printing, thanks to American Excellence and Brooklin producing so much new stuff.

The others are a series of "In Miniature" (as in "Ford in Miniature") books...Ford, GM, Chrysler, and Independents (so far). These too, get somewhat outdated. They have color photos (whereas "Wheels" has no photos). The cars are all 1:43, mostly handbuilts, although a few of the better Yat Mings and others are included. This series was authored by Randall Olson.

Both of these are "bibles" for the serious 1:43 collector.
