Lately, I have been experiencing some odd behavior with my Legacy system and I hope the collective intelligence of the forum can help me figure out where the problem is

I’ve had a 990 system for quite a few years, and, about a year ago, I added a 993. Recently, I’ve noticed that, when I power up the layout, the two base units will flash with alternating red lights (charging). After a while, the CAB2 handset in the 993 will switch to alternating green lights, and eventually to solid green. The CAB2 handset in the the 990 base will go from alternating red lights to solid red lights. If I switch the CAB2 handsets, I get the same result - 993 goes to steady green, 990 goes to steady red. From this, I am assuming that there is an issue with the 990 base unit - does this seem to be correct??? If so, can anyone suggest something I should check before contacting Lionel??? And before you ask, I have tried putting in new batteries - same issue.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

The infamous charging issue with the #990.  Truthfully, I stopped charging the CAB2 in the #990, even though I did get the charging circuit fixed.  It still gets the CAB2 pretty warm, way warmer than I feel is good for the batteries.  However, if I charge them in the #993 charging base, they charge properly every time, and when I take the remote out, it's stone cold, no overheating.  I picked up two #993 charging bases on eBay a few years back cheap, that's what I use.
