Hi all... I have an odd behaving TIU. It's just an extra, not used much, so repair is not really an issue. I paid very little for it and a hand held so expense is not a concern. The other day I was attempting to program an engine, i.e. load a sound file, while using a Lionel 90 watt transformer. I notice the power knob give slightly and exceed it's normal travel limit. Didn't really seem like much to worry about, but apparently it caused this transformer to wildly vary voltage output. I had successfully loaded the sound file but there were some problems with the engine that required a trip to the bench to rectify. At this point I wanted to load a name into the engine but now the TIU reported No Engine to Add. Check Track. No DCS Engine. I tried resetting the remote and another add same results. This is when I actually discoverd that the transformer was not performing as it should. So I exchanged it for an MTH 750 brick. Same results. All this was being done using Fixed 1, for both track and logic power. Next I tried a different engine, same result. Finally I tried aux power and Fixed 2 and all worked as expected. Now comes the strange part. If I switch every thing back to fixed 1 I can run the engine added but with each command I get a check track message when ever the system expects an answer from the engine. I still cannot add an engine, but can run an engine. Any thoughts?

Sounds like the receiver side of that channel is out.
The TIU has both a transmitter and a receiver on each channel.
If the engine fails to reply you get the CHECK TRACK message.
If the engine works on Fixed 2 with no error msg and you always get it on Fixed 1, that has to be the problem.
MTH should be able to repair that issue as long as the parts are still available.
The signal generator on fixed 1 is just about done, enough to let the odd command take but low enough that you can't add an engine, I suspect the signal is 1, 2, maybe 3. It's done , however you still have fixed 2 for experimenting.
Thanks for the input guys. I suspected it was something like that. I should think that the variable channels would also still be working as they have never been used. I use this TIU as spare to drag around with me when I'm doing programming work away from home so if it fails entirely it will not be critical.
Just wondering... could a service tech repair this if the parts are available? My BF is a Tech and I can order parts through my employer/LHS. Would be worth it for the experience.
Thanks.

I think so , go for it providing it's not going to cost an arm and a leg.
Cheryl,
Because your BF is a Tech I would definitely try to get the parts, and if possible
bring the TIU up to the latest Rev.

PCR...
The funny thing about this, lol, is this TIU was at the latest REV. That was why I used it as my programming TIU, and is also why I would like to fix it.
Anyone have any idea what the part numbers/identifications are? We can poke around on the Tech site, but if somebody knows, it would save some time. Thanks.
Since I last posted, we've tried a couple things. It was suggested that the coils might be the problem and to check for any the seem black. Not coppery and shiney. It would seem that there are 4-5 of them that I would consider black. We tried swapping them out with coils from some parts TIU's we have, and no joy. Could someone elaborate and possibly explain what the coils rate at and how black is black?
I'm pretty sure he does, will give your advice a shot. Hate to give up on the TIU if it's repairable.
