I am sitting here watching my G scale Aristocraft Alco FA-1 running around my overhead loop in our living room and the light bulb went off in my head. What about putting onboard battery and RC in a Weaver 3 rail PRR M1a mountain? Plenty of room in the huge tender for it. The G scale Alco has 2 can motors, 4 light bulbs plus an LED head light. I am over 3 hours of solid run time and the battery shows no sign of voltage drop yet. I am using a Onyx 5000mah 7.2vt Nimh battery from my RC cars, its fed thru a DPDT toggle to select run or charging. Since I am a "turn it on and let it run" type of operator, its perfect, nice easy 25-30 smph. I would probably put an actual tx/rx set up in the mountain. I am thinking of using RCS as its small and is supposed to have very little voltage draw. I would disable the smoke, dont use it normaly due to asthma. No sound as it bothers me(autistic sensory issue). With a single can motor, run times should be excellent. Of coarse you might say "why?", well my friend and I are planning a sizable outdoor loop at his place and eventualy mine. This would eliminate the need to clean track all the time. A quick set up to run would be a snap. Anybody tried this with an engine? Mike

Yes. There are a few companies that have the components to do what you want to do. Go to the Air wire web site. G
There have been earlier posts on this topic. It's certainly been done. In the R/C world there are lots of choices and options emerging enabling the model railroad/trains crowd to enjoy the benefits. It's especially embedded in the G (Large Scale) end of the hobby....many articles, many devotees.
RCS America is another player. They have had a booth at York for the past couple years. They've demonstrated battery powered, radio control options for O scale.
We (wife and I) installed an RCS battery-powered system in an LGB mogul. Works great!! Fun to demo the engine/tender by setting it on the floor...no track...and watching it fire up and chuff away!!....to the amazement and delight of folks who think all toy/model trains must run on tracks powered by an external source. (For big and little kids who remember reading the Little Golden Book, "Tootle", .....why not?)
I continue to predict that battery-powered, R/C control will someday be more commonplace in the O gauge segment of the hobby. And as battery technology continues to advance, it may even become popular with the HO crowd.
And, maybe, there'll even be a separate controls category discussing the same in this forum.

Hi Guys, I am new to the forum and also use and install the RCS America RailLinx products. To avoid any confusion RCS America is separate from RCS of Australia. I represented RCS Australia for 15 years. Starting in 2011 the RailLinx products are made in the USA and we offer a complete kit and local service. We plan on advertising soon and than I can share more info.
Mike, my first O gauge loco install was a Weaver RS-3 then the Weaver brass I-4. I will miss Joe and his company.
