I want to record the sound of a F3 diesel train horn as a MP3 file for use in a now-silent trackside accessory through a sound effects chip. Suggestion(s) welcome.

Mike you can try to follow the links starting here:

Click through and eventually you'll reach a page where you can listen to various horns (like the Nathan K5LA) and even download the sound file. Hope this helps!

Ted S.
Thanks for that tip. I downloaded the Leslie A200 horn blast - perfect!
I intend to apply that sound effect along with spoken text to a circuit with a small speaker to be mounted near Menard's ROCKET DINER (which is a sound-less accessory). The finished installation would be as per the attachment. I know, it's a fussy detail, but it was fun to do and even more fun for my great grandkids to activate.

@The GN Man posted:Mike, the Leslie A-200 horn at the site Ted posted above is probably what you need to represent an F3.

Ted, this is a great resource! Thank you for pointing it out.
This is a wonderful resource. RailPro allows the user to upload any sound. These would have to be modified to a single blast and saved as .wav files. RailPro then loops the sound so you get as long or as short a horn blast as you want.
Can you picture this one screaming to a crossing around a curve with the reverb and echo of a nearby mountain?
