I booked a room for the 1st time here. Just need a clean, safe place to rest my weary bones after a long day at the meet.

I usually stay up near Harrisburg where the rates are cheaper but I dread the 30 minute drive up route 83 (unless I am going to Ceasars' open house on York Thursdays  .

Thought I would try something in York that was not too expensive.

Would appreciate to hear what others think if they have / are stayig there.

Thanks

Sam

Just ignore Eddie, Sam. Several people here like to make fun of the economy places.

I just booked there as well and have stayed at a Florida Rodeway location for a Mecum Auto Auction once before. It's just fine for one night's rest between show days. According to all the hotel finders it is literally the cheapest and closest option to the show at $80 / night and a mere 4 minutes from the fairgrounds according to Google Maps. That particular Rodeway was also just recently completely renovated so it should be nice and fresh.

I went to the York Daily Record web site and did a search. The motel was closed for almost a year after a devastating fire. They caught the guy who started it. It re-opened in January, with major rebuilding and renovation, and got a "White Rose" award from the paper for doing so.

I had been planning on driving up and back each day, but the hour+ trip started to look not so inviting. So, at this late date, I did reserve at the Rodeway for the 24th and 25th.

Guess I'll see some of you there and we can then post an update afterwards!

Must be the only motel in York that still has vacancies this close to the meet?

The web site has a "virtual tour" feature, and it looks like your standard motel.

I think the Super8 has "last minute" rooms (stayed there a few times), but they were about $20. more. Guess the Rodeway is trying to get folks back after being closed due to rebuilding after the fire. Since I only live 105 minutes from York, it dosen't make sense to me to spend money on a motel that takes 30 minutes to drive to.

I don't know why some are so mean-spirited about this motel. These forum members have left a negative impression on me.

I've had good luck by reading the reviews on TripAdvisor.  Unfortunately, the latest review on this hotel is from October 2013.  The reviews are pretty lousy, but they are old.  According to TripAdvisor, the Rodeway is rated 24th out of 24 hotels in York.  I'm a Cubs fan - I'm used to being in last place.

Hope you have a good experience.

I'm with you, except I extend it to all online reviews unless the reviewer is someone I know or true based on prior experience.  I scan online reviews when I'm planning to buy something, but I, like you, have learned that people who are disgruntled are far more likely to post a review than those who were satisfied with the experience or product.

Allan, OK, stay there, get a nice clean large room, you will probably get room service too. I've stayed in some pretty ordinary places in my life, but this joint is a dump.

No, that's okay, Dave…I'll be at the Wingate with the rest of our crew this time around.

However, I am truly sorry that you had a bad experience with your lodgings when you came to York several years ago.  You traveled a very l-o-n-g way and certainly deserved better for your first York Meet visit.  If you make the trip again--and I certainly hope that you will--let me know first and I'll make sure you are booked in a place you'll enjoy.

These days, there is no shortage of really decent hotels in the immediate area, but you still may have a hard time if you wait until near to the event date to book a room.  Better to book well in advance and then cancel, if need be, instead of waiting until the last minute to find a decent room.

Actually Allan, my first stay was at the hotel adjacent to TGI Fridays, it was OK, except the room stunk of smoke, the last time Professor Scher put me in the Rodeway, he still hasn't heard the end of it, he's coming to Oz and will see me in July, I have a nice hovel for him all lined up. I hope he likes dirt floors.

Ah!  Nothing like a little payback, huh, Dave!    But if I could get over to Australia again I would happily stay in a room with dirt floors.  I loved my visits to NSW nearly a lifetime ago.

Personally, unless there is nothing else I available, I stay with the bigger chains (Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and their derivative brands).  They tend to be more consistent in terms of the cleanliness of the facility and rooms. Moreover, I cannot tolerate tobacco smoke smell and these places are less likely to have smelly rooms.  Just my .02.

It's all true. I was able to lure Dave and EZMike Lauria to the Rodeway with promises of a decent room for a good price. It turned about to be a recent room not nice. In any case dirt floors in Australia sound exotic to me. Perhaps a Koala will wander in.

Fortunately, York goers who read this thread can dismiss my warnings. I would, however, listen to Dave Allen who still has a good reputation. EZMike is a health professional who will also verify Dave's opinion of Rodeway. Scrapiron's reputation is suspect.

in all seriousness, I have stayed in hundreds of hotels and motels in my life. Rodeway is the worst ever. Period.

Will probably be the same as October 2013 honestly. For that meet I stayed at the Econo Lodge and only because the Rodeway was still undergoing renovations. I got lucky in the same way for that meet, the front desk told me my room had just recently been renovated as well. It was actually a very pleasant surprise, I may have been the first person to even stay in the room judging by how brand new it all looked.

Now the Rodeway front desk has told me the same thing, after the fire incident the whole establishment was completely renovated. So I'm not worried in the least. And even if they didn't renovate, it's still hard for any hotel establishment to mess up a simple 8 hours worth of shower and sleep...

IMO, it boils down to having a nice view and lobby vs. a extra $70. to spend on train stuff.

I really don't understand all the negativity towards Rodeway. Unless you need more than a place to sleep, keep your stuff and to shower it looks OK to me.

Rodeway.

I don't get the bedbugs and roaches and hooker comments, how do you know?

Guess if someone has a bad experience they are more likely to post a bad comment than the many more who had a fine stay would.

Didn't realize we had so many here on the forum who are used to getting the Presidential Suite at the Ritz and consider anything less a hovel.

This will be my last comment on Rodeway and I will tell you why. It's because a request was made for opinions on the motel and folks feel a need to chime in and "wonder" why we make comments as we have. I grew up in NYC. When I see a young woman in a mini skirt that is shorter than my memory, in fishnet stockings, heavily made up and leading a man into a room while two or three other girls dressed just like her are on the street in front of the hotel, my first thought is that they are aspiring opera stars. Now I could be wrong, but they had good voices.

I saw the bugs, smelled the horrid cigarette smoke in our room and got an asthma attack from the musty odor. In addition, there were two other folks with me who have already been named that have said the same things.

Next time a Forum member asks for an opinion abut motels, I'll keep it to myself.

Let them find out for themselves.

I have spoken.
