Recently picked up a Legacy Heavy Mikado  6-81186  from a nice forum member and am curious about it's origins. There are several threads running about various scale mikados and how Lionel utilizes the handsome K-Line tooling for several of them. One poster mentioned that "the less expensive Lionel heavy mikes were of a more recent design" or similar which got me curious. These were introduced in the 2014 signature catalog according to Lionel's archive site. Description says "newly tooled" boiler. The humped-back boiler almost seems over arched - is this profile accurate?  I have had a K-Line Southern model and one of the earlier Legacy UP light mikados years before which were very visually different. Any info/experience on these would be appreciated.

Thanks Rick. Any info on the development of the model itself? Assuming it's using the existing K-Line chassis hopefully with a larger forward-facing motor?

My pilot wheels appear undersized (as usual) and I may look to replace them. Really don't like small pilot wheels that Lionel seems prone to using to accommodate 036 fastrack on almost all of their scale steamers, even some of the larger ones!

Sam, the chassis and motor are the same as the K-Line and Lionel Light Mikado. I think the same was true of the prototype other than maybe slightly larger cylinders.

Only a handful of roads bought these. Lionels is pretty accurate though. Prior to production they had a 3D shell printed and was on display at York.

MTH seems to use heavy and light interchangeably for the same engine. Lionel’s is different as it should be.

Thanks Pete. Did some reading earlier and it appears that the Southern RR bought a total of 182 mikados back in 1911 with today's SR 1405 being the first produced. Viewing the many photos on this site, they all appear to be the 'straight backed' models (light mikes?). Would it be a stretch to reletter my Frisco model to one of the other SR mikes?
