Our Favorite MTH Trains

Thanks to all for sharing. Great posts.

 I have or had nearly 100 or more of MTH's engines alone, besides all the other great stuff that I was fortunate to get. I love them all. Even one of my personally bought new one gauge Challengers that had a rough beginning still runs great for me now. I wandered between one gauge and O scale 2 rail. I always favored the one gauge. It's just that there was so much more available in O. I will cherish the models that I got as long as I can. There have been many times in my life where I lost near everything. I always got it back and more. 

 I would thank MTH the most for the great control system that at times was a little frustrating (software bugs) but well worth the effort to straighten out.

It gave me the opportunity to have more trains running than I had thought possible. I could fill several pages here with pics and videos. I loved them all.

I really like my R-17 4 Car Subway (Redbirds) Set plus the 2 Car add-on set. Even though it was Railking, I found that the detail was fantastic.

I also have an old PS1 Florida East Coast F3 AA Set that was my first MTH purchase. I saw it reviewed years ago in CTT and I had to have it. I've since found a matching B unit to run with it.

I also have many Boxcars that were uncataloged and fun to collect: my favorites are the Chick-fil-a and Sears Craftsman.

Of course, it's yet another favorite: the MTH Broadway Limited:

That's an MTH Railking Proto 1 Pennsy K4 hauling Railking Pennsy passenger cars.

The prior post also had MTH Railking passenger cars (New York Central) in the Twentieth Century Limited consist.

All reeking of quality at affordable prices.

As much as I love MTH, don't think for a minute that my love is any less for Postwar and modern Lionel. IMO, both Lionel and MTH are equally great.

I pretty much like them all but a few of my favorites are those not available on the mass market save for MTH.

MTH Premier Great Northern W-1 electric locomotive #5019 (with PS-2) was delivered in 2001. It is 26-inches in length, heavy and die-cast. Shown on one of the truss bridges on my 12’-by-8’ layout that I built from a kit by Miami Valley Products. This model is an example of the unique MTH Premier scale models produced by Mike Wolf that were unmatched at the time and ever since.

My favorite although I'm sure its not everyone's cup of tea. Runs great although I had to make sure it was going to clear everything located beside a curve first.

I didn't go for all the engines, but I liked these as well.  I have to admit I wasn't familiar with the line before they were offered, but I decided to start a train by buying an engine and most of the rolling stock.  (I'm not originally from that area, but I went to school in Buffalo) 

I then did a double take when I saw the other road name (or multiple?, I forget now) with very similar paint in other catalogs and read up on that a bit, so MTH caused me to learn a little (at least momentarily, I couldn't re-tell the history without looking it up again ).

My PRR decapod, short tenderis my MTH favorite absolutely. I bought it used years ago and had problems with the operation for some reason. Eventually I had ERR installed and modified for 4 chuffs. Since then it has been a sweet runner. 

EZ! This city boy loves all things commuter--PRR passenger, LIRR--but above all, I'm with Strap Hanger--I adore these subway sets. I will surely miss them. Of all of them, the 7 Flushing '64 World's Fair Set is my favorite! Also, like Arnold, my layout is small and my turns sharp, so I need RailKing.

Great thread Arnold. Great pics from all those who replied.

Many of us have some MTH that we treasure, but only a few have such a massive MTH collection that includes almost everything MTH made.

I feel that all of the fabulous videos, photos and comments shared here enable us all to experience and appreciate the MTH we don't have. For me, I have a fair amount of Railking, which I love, but very few Premier and other high end MTH.

Arnold, I agree: I think that MTH did such a nice job on their Railking line that I didn't need to look at their Premier products.

While the detail and scale features of Premier are fantastic, Railking is not too shabby either.

The MTH Standard Gauge B&O 384 Passenger set with the two extra cars .

There it is, on the right, a scale Blue Comet, with its scale MTH passenger consist. The thing I like best about it, in addition to its dependability, is that it makes copious smoke, tons of it, trainroom-filling smoke. It helps make the play fun.

For me it is the MTH PS3 SW1500.

Like its prototype namesake it will pull stumps all day at a steady 4 smph.

To make room for the 12-645 Prime Mover in the prototype the hood is taller than all predecessor SWs. The frame is beefier as well. Most SW1500s were sold with Flexicoil trucks to allow 60mph road speed. The MTH model reflects these features as well. A beautiful model of a down-and-gritty prototype.

IMO, MTH mastered the smoke unit. My MTH steamers and diesels, all have robust smoke, which is my favorite locomotive feature.

I find the smoke units of other O Gauge manufactures tend to produce less smoke and are more delicate, so they are more likely to fall into disrepair than those made by MTH.
