This is our first visionline, a big boy in our favorite black and gold fantasy paint scheme. The detail shows up better than perhaps a prototypical black engine. The features are first rate. If you prefer, skip the unboxing and watch the run session. We would appreciate opinions on the derailing and paint flake issue.

Thanks, Gino . We really love that fantasy paint scheme and the features are especially nice on our first visionline.
Just being curious about the derail issue, but did you turn it over and check both sets of drivers for the exact amount of free movement with no places that it hangs up or catches as you swing them to their limits? How about vertical movement when you pull up and push down on the driver sets as you swivel them to the limits? That one spot where it clicks down hard on the track sure looks to me like it was hung on something.
I watched the section where the engine derailed. It looked to me as if the first set of drivers was obstructed by something under the loco. Check for free movement by slowly rotating the first set of drivers while looking under the boiler. If it ain't perfect . . . . . . . you know what to do.
I have the new Big Boy. Have gargraves with Ross switches. O-72 curves. Runs perfectly. I think there is something wrong with drivers or Spring or what ever, I don’t believe it’s the track. That engine should handle any small irregularities in the track. Send it back to Lionel for warranty. That engine is too expensive to be running it in that situation. My opinion.

Actually, only one set of drivers articulate. That would be the front set of drivers, or in correct terms, the front engine. The rear engine ( rear set of drivers ) is fixed to the boiler shell like any non-articulated locomotive would be .

I would get with Lionel ASAP. I have two earlier BB's and have no problem with Atlas O-72
In your video at 32.42 just under the boiler where that part has paint wore off, that could be where your problem is. For some reason it's moving and rubbing under the other piping, which could be allowing the pivoting drive truck to tilt and become ridged.
Could that section of 072 track be a little tighter then 072 ?
Great video! With all due respect.
From the video:
" I think the fact that when it started doing it only on that one curve, and its O.K. on the other 3 curves told me that curve isn't completely natural. But because there is a water heater, stairs, and its hard to get at. Theres a cement pillar that forces us to put the track in a very particular place. So we have no choice"
Trackwork and wiring are the two most critical aspects of a good running layout. Compromises of either can result in operating issues.
Since you have identified the offending curve as one that may not be "true". You may have answered your own questions. The flaking paint is likely the result of the steam pipe detail rubbing while trying to negotiate this " not completely natural curve".
Minimum radiuses are stated for a reason. As the locomotives get larger, the more strict adhereing to the minimum radius becomes.
FWIW, I have used Atlas O track for years and I have never had a Lionel engine derail on it. From your video, it looks like the front Big Boy engine is being slightly obstructed by something under the boiler. There seemed to be a "hitch" and then the driver went overboard. My recommendation? DON'T mess with it. IF YOU CAN find it, great. I sent my Big Boy back as a return because it was DOA and for that kind of money I didn't want aggravation.
Good morning, Happy New Year - what are the dimensions of LCCA visionline Lionel Big Boy 4023 ? Thanks
