Just finally opened some trains that I have purchased the last few months, first up was Lionel's KCS ES44AC dummy unit. I really don't complain too often but come on Lionel, I know my eyes are getting old but the Red on the engine has a pink hue to it. This happened on the last Lionel KCS ES44 I bought about a year ago, it was so awful I sold it (this is probably heading there as well) I have every Lionel KCS loco Lionel has ever made, ES44's, Sd70's, Genset, etc. The older models have a much brighter Red to them. The latest offering's color wise are terrible, IMO

Next up is my LOTS Santa Fe warbonnet maxi stack, again the Red is dull not shiny like all of the previous offerings. This is what happens when we pre-order sight unseen, it is a double-edged sword because sometimes you lose out if you don't pre order. Good grief!!!!

I know the pictures are not the greatest, but you get the idea. Just yet another reason why I miss brick & mortar train stores, there were so many here in NE Ohio years ago. You could go in and see before buying. I know this is the same old story on both the brick & mortar stores as well as Lionel's color issues.

I am not trying to bash Lionel, I have a 40 plus year collection of their products, just bummed when the colors are so off.  Okay, I am done crying now off to open more trains, crossing my fingers!!   Welcome to the weekend all, run some trains!!!  Let me know your thoughts if so desire, maybe I am dead wrong??

@jjames9641  wow the KCS looks like my orange BNSF engine.

Check out this link to KCS colors. There is an E3a which looks far less red than other versions. If Lionel used this as a reference, then maybe not all that far off.  I would prefer the more traditional red myself.

@ScoutingDad, that was an interesting study on the KCS paint schemes, and how they morphed over time. They are certainly not alone, as many RRs also have had many changes. My gut, however, tells me that lighting has a lot to do with how the viewer interprets the respective images, which vary by sunlight, clouds, camera filters and the like. Still I cut the manufacturers little slack. They are the **Pros*** after all.

But for the sake of "red", see attached photo of 3 locos by Lionel, MTH and Atlas. Even my less-then-studio pics would look totally different in sunlight, but you can see some difference. I don't believe VRS has changed their red over the years, even though they have has other color combinations while using red as a base. Lionel did the one in the upper right. In my view, it's slightly cheerful, but fairly accurate. I like the fact that it shines. Numerous photos of VRS 431 can be found on the web, none of which have black trucks....only dirty silver ones.....so IDK where they came up with that.

The lower left is a brand new MTH that I picked up 2 weeks ago. Kudos for getting the trucks right, but I was expecting more of a shiny, new-paint red than a dull, cast-plastic pellet red. They get a ding for making this sole run also numbered as 431 when 432 was up for grabs.

The bottom right is an Atlas. Great detail and pulls like the Dickens, but reminds me of de-oxigenated blood very time I run it. Def not something I 've seen out on the road.

The Lionel CV loco is puke green and nowhere in the realm of reality, but just moving it from one shelf to another changes how it's depicted and how I see it.  I only bought it because I wanted the road name. I dwelled on it for weeks before I gagged and brought it home. Someday, I may send it out for a repaint.

Yes, Jeff ScoutingDad you do like color.  I can’t take any photographs right now, but I can attest that my WM caboose roster has several different reds.  Looking at prototype color photographs, I have seen some look bright red and others are more of a dark red, just like my models.  Lighting?  Film?  Or different buckets of paint?  🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Well Mark Boyce can attest I like color in my engines and rolling stock.  I kind of like the CV green.  I have not done a search, what road names do you model. I presume you like  Vermont railroads.

Yes, I love Vermont and it's railroads, but got bitten by the **love** locos bug and scooped up several northern New England roads, most notably B&M, Guilford, Pan Am, Maine Central diesels and one lonely Rutland steamer. My very fav colors, though, are the G&W orange ones, which MTH hit spot-on. See attached. Not the best pose, but my entire layout is presently in a sealed crate in the barn!

Not withstanding the subjectivity of color and the tastes thereof, that CV green is MILES away from what it should be. They did a good job with the running gear, smoke, sound, etc, but the color is....yuck!
