That might be the way to go. I just checked the tower and crew talk on my Legacy PRR U28c and the sounds are not engine specific. They don't announce the engine number just say that "you are cleared outbound".

Could you use double sided tape to hold it in place? Perhaps the think black foam type or simply scotch tape?

 

I don't think you have anything to lose at this point even if you need to remove the remaining tab.

The cab is styrene. You could get some styrene stock and fabricate some tabs. If you have any old kits laying around you could use a piece of sprue. Use a solvent glue to attach the tabs and it will be nearly as strong as new. I had to a reattach broken tab on one of my engines.
