One of our club members got to emailing with Bob Bartizek in Lebannon Ohio. We got an invitation to come and see his layout this past Saturday.

I think that "OGR" did a super, super job, with the January issue story of this layout. Never dreaming, that I would get to see something of this magnitude, that was in the Best Model Railroad Magazine known to man, the "OGR" that is!!

We met Bob, and his wife when 1st arriving, and Bob then escorted us to the "Train Room". When getting to the end of the stair case, I knew it was special, as there was a full size color Pennsylvania Railroad Insignia inserted into the wall to wall carpet on the floor.

Bob told us a great story of his past, and thru job relocation, how he and his family settled in Lebannon Ohio.

I know there are know doubt bigger layouts around the country than Bob's, but none any better, and most ain't close. I wouldn't have ever believed that a layout that large, could ever have been operated, using the old Lionel "TMCC" Control system.

We double headed A Mike, a Decapod, with long string of freight cars, and a 2-10-2 pusher, up a 3% grade, around the Horseshoe Curve. I know that Bob keeps all of his equipment in fine tune, but in, around, and out of site, then back into view, and up, and down hills, the old TMCC System did a super, super job, with "Narry" a derailment!!!

They do actual Railroad Operations a day or 2 each week, and then the Operations groups move to other layouts to run.

We discussed what our club's SOP has been in the past, at dinner on our way back home. That we need to start doing something similar. It would definitely make it much more interesting, other than putting an engine or 2 with a bunch of cars, letting them run around a layout, blowing the whistle and ringing the bell.

It nice to be invited out to see, what the rest of the world does!

Special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Bartizek  from members of the Appalachian Model Railroad Society (AMRS).............Brandy!

What! No pictures? This thread is useless.

The OP started a very nice thread emphasizing the proto-op session that Bob runs on his railroad.  I found it quite interesting.  What pictures do you want,  pictures of a printed timetable for the Pennslyvania and Western and a Form 19?

If you want photos of his railroad, how about doing some research instead of crapping on a nice thread?  I posted a link to the "Model Railroad Hobbiest" article about six months ago.  Go find it.   The link is in there.  I'm not doing the same e-mail twice.

I just saw this thread.  Brandy, it was a pleasure to host you and the other guys from the club.  It's not every day that I get visited by a group of 3-railers interested in prototypical operation!  I'm working on setting up a full operating session for your next visit.

Prrhorseshoecurve, I'm sorry that a thread without photos is of no value to you.  You must run into that a lot here on the forum.  Photos are on my website, in the January 2016 O Gauge Railroading, in the July 2015 Railroad Model Craftsman and online in the March 2014 issue of Model Railroad Hobbyist (link below).  As Hot Water said, there is almost an hour of video on the Pennsylvania & Western in Great Layout Adventures volume 11.

Bob's work is inspiring.  I operate on friend's HO and N scale layouts.  Operations are one of the most enjoyable aspects of the hobby for me and many others.

I wish that I had the space to operate using 3-rail O.  I think that one of the reasons that the O gauge hobby in general has fewer followers than the smaller scales is that almost no one builds an operating O gauge layout (2 or 3 rail) even when they have the space.

There are two large O scale 2-rail clubs in my area.  Neither of them has operating sessions.  All they do is loop running.   This can quickly get boring even on a very large display.

Maybe more people will follow Bob's example and build an operational 3 rail railroad.   I think that operations will attract more people to the O gauge community.

Bob,

I am one of the club members that visited your late this past Saturday.  Its great to see a fantastic 3-Rail O scale designed for operations.  I've participated in a number of operating sessions, but they have all been on HO layouts.  I'm looking forward to coming back for an operating session.

Thank you so much for allowing our club to see this great layout in person!
