I understand that PFE Express Reefer woud have been at the head end of a passenger train.

Would there have been more than one of this express reefers at the head end?  Did the UP or SP run unit PFE express trains?  I have seen tons of pics to long regular PFE reefers, but have never seen a pic of more than one of the express reefers in a train.

thanks!

There were 300 PFE express refers. They were built in the late 1920s and lasted into the early 1960s. Originally they were leased to various express companies, and later to REA.  They operated the cars on passenger trains.  In later years PFE took over more of the operating responsibility. The reason that there is no lettering on the left side of the door is originally that is where express companies put their logos.  For passenger train operation the cars were equipped with spring buffers, stream lines, and air signal lines. Originally the cars were ices through the doors at passenger car service facilities. Roof hatches were add later. Ara were numbered 500 to 799.
