hello all. I think I know the answer on this but asking to confirm; it looks like some lionel engines/cars were built with couplers that are plastic from what I know of the spring for the knuckle is an integral plastic spring not the steel coil I know those don’t last long I have a chessie limited edition and looks like that’s what it’s built with. any confirm?

Not just Lionel. Nothing wrong with plastic couplers, but those integral plastic return "springs" should not be allowed by the Geneva Convention.
those plastic knuckles have there place for a fast fix but if your taking the time to rebuilt a coupler arm it’s better to build it with the metal knuckle and spring it’s not really hard to do
