If your modeling like a rock cut. I would cut the roadbed more on the wide side and give whatever method you choose something to rest on. Even a hill you would probably want a bit of terrain before it sloped downward. If you cut it on the narrow side.You can always add profile boards at later date screwed to the underside of the roadbed. Using 1 x 2’s  or scrap plywood to support any scenic elements.

So, the ties on my supersnap/shadow rail k-line track are 2.25". The sparks roadbed is 3.25" wide, so to leave room to attach plaster cloth etc to the edge I'm planning to cut my sub-roadbed to a width of 4.25" for the single track line, for double track one would have to adjust the width to account for the desired center rail to center rail spacing. Doubling up the sparks roadbed would be 6.5" and give you a 4.5" center rail to center rail spacing. In that case the sub-roadbed would be 7.5" wide.
