Flyer ALCO diesels paint schemes

The only "official" guess I have seen in published literature is Rock Island.

Looking at vintage photos of Rock Island diesels shows them in maroon and very different artwork. Do see something different? Perhaps the Flyer artists just put this green themed scheme together on their own?

I always thought it was patterned after the early Southern Railway scheme.

My source is Don Heimburger's Gilbert Heritage Book. It is true the paint scheme and colors had to pass A.C.'s approval. The Rocket was not based on the Southern per most Gilbert sources. I do not recall for sure but I think Don Heimburger's statement came from a Maury Romer interview.

I always liked the early American Flyer catalog cover with the very large Rocket and a Hudson (?) coming at you on a double main line.  

That is the 1953 cover with a Hudson and an Alco Rocket. The 1951 cover was similar with a Hudson and an Alco Santa Fe Warbonnet.

Well, at least the Southern used green (and white), plus a round Southern logo on the nose too, much like the Rocket decal on the nose of the Flyer ALCO. Something to ponder.
