Surprised at all the Road Names in Nj

I live about 45 miles west of NYC in NJ

I was stopped at a railroad crossing today - a freight train train led by two Nofolk Southern SD40 Diesels consisting of auto cars passed. I was amazed by all the different road names included. There were NS, UP, CPKC BNSF and one or two others - I believe this line goes to the Port of Newark where I’ve seen huge lots of new cars parked awaiting shipment

Besides seeing all the different road names and especially the ones from Midwest and West coast I was wondering how all the rail cars from the various rail lines are controlled- who keeps track of them ?
