On impulse I bought an early (2005ish) used Polar Express set from a friend this Christmas time. It ran great until last week. Now the engine runs intermittently. It will go part way around the loop of Fastrack and just stop. It won't change direction. It might start if I push a little forward or backwards but it soon stops dead again. I can run other engines on the loop with no problems after I take off the Berkshire.

I did find that the spring for the front pickup roller is broken and exerts no pressure on that roller which is free to jump up and down. I checked on the Lionel site and found they have no replacement parts. I don't know if that roller problem would cause intermittent running but it certainly needs to be resolved.

I am asking for help to troubleshoot the lack of running issue and to see how to get the roller assembly or even repair the broken part.

Thank you

David

This is the early conventional version. I don't remember about the headlight.

A friend glued a spring under the front pick up roller and there is good tension on it now. As a result, the engine is running fine. That suggests to me that the floppy pick up roller was causing the problem.

Lionel has no replacement parts listed for the engine anymore. I still think it would be helpful to replace the dual pick up roller assembly if anyone could find a part number and a part.

Thanks for checking with me
