I have a Polar express diesel (6-38250)with less than a half hour of track time. It has a herky jerky motion as it travels around the track. Sometimes it just stops. Where should I start looking for the solution to my problem?

How clean is your track and what kind of track are you using? You may have track joint issues.
You could also check the traction tires and make sure they aren't too thick, rubbing on the brake shoe detail of the trucks.
Check the pickup rollers, too. I have a lot of stuff that sits in storage, and the rollers usually need a shot of cleaner and some run time to work out the corrosion/oxidation off the roller pins before things smooth out.
Track doesn't seem to matter. I have tried this on O 27 tubular and fastrack. No other engine does this. Next up I will check traction tires and rollers.
I've had brand new locomotives come with oily/dirty coatings on the wheels and pick up rollers. Have you checked those?
I did everything recommended by those on this forum. Then I got this engine with cars on the track and just let it run for an hour to break it in. It runs like a Lionel! Thanks to all who helped.
