A 1970's pic of an Amtrak Turboliner lead me to a google maps view of Porter Indiana. This looks like an interesting place. Just curious how does CSX cross over the busy NS line? It appears the crossover was removed and CSX can only come off or on the NS at different directions...but the two CSX line halves are feet apart. Why? Also to the left of Porter what is the electrified line? Is it still in use?

I can answer one of your questions....The electric line is the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad. Runs from Micigan CIty to Chicago, their shops are in Michigan City also...

In another life, I worked PBX for General Telephone of the Midwest based out of Portage Indiana. Many a time I got to go to Porter tower to fix phones, teletype etc. At that time no interest in trains whatsoever. ARRRGH, how many times I COULD have taken pictures of trains coming and going close up and personal if only I had been. Sigh....
