I recently came across this Lionel set in its original boxes, but can't find any references to the set or its engine No. 245.  The set consists of Engine No. 245, Tender No. 1130T, Box Car No. 6014-100 (red Airex), Gondola No. 6162-1 (blue NYC), Tank Car No. 6465-85 (black Lionel Lines), and Caboose No. 6017-1 (Lionel Lines). Any help in identifying locomotive and whether this is an original set would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The engine & tender are listed in the 2016 Greenberg's price guide, page 56, 1959. The Airex boxcar on page 76, 1960. NYC gondola(very common) is on page 78, years made 1959 to 68. The caboose is on page 76 and made from 1951 to 1962, again a common caboose. The tank car is on page 86, made in 1959.

So far I don't know about it being an original set as one item is out of place for 1959. Looked in the back of the Greenberg's guide and no set for a 245 engine. Also checked the Doyle's train set book I have and no success finding any information in there at all on a 245 engine. The best I can tell you is that it is an unlisted or uncatalogued 027 train set from around 1960.

It looks like set X-855 from 1959.  The engine is a Columbia #245,1130T tender,6465 tanker (Sunoco 2 dome),6162 gon,6014 boxcar and 6017 caboose.

#245 was uncatalogued in 1959,I think.

Just curious, where did you find the information on this set?

The # 245 was an-uncatalogued item for 1959 according to Greenberg's guide.

The 245 (and 235) are not common scout type engines. The 245 is listed as manufactured in 1959, but Lionel had a stock of these engines on hand to include them in uncataloged sets in 1960 also. Your set has the components of a 1959 set ( black L.L. tank car and red Airex box).  I too would be interested in Norms source for the set #X-855, as I have no information on this set.
