I can tell you why you should use the add atttachments method and not use the copy and paste method.

Search the forum and find and answer to a problem discussed in 2011 or 2012 and an important photo of the fix is missing with a dumb photo bucket message.

Search for a layout design idea and find a wonderful layout with the photos missing. Same dumb message.

Find a thread of interest and the photo of the topic is so small, zooming the browser doesn't give you a good look.

Use the tools the forum provides and be considerate of other forum users.

Copy and paste is so Win98.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I was able to add a pair of two photo replies this morning using the "add attachments" method and both replies appeared right away with the photos displayed.

The cut and paste method did work for one reply with only one photo. Obviously, that method does not work with multiple photos in one reply.

Moonman, I am sorry if you were offended by my questions and lack of knowledge about this forum. I didn't think I was being inconsiderate by asking for help. I guess that, in your opinion, only experts should make posts and not trouble the tech support people with questions.

Jerry

Sorry, Jerry. That was a little harsh. I vented my frustration on your situation.

Actually, I was speaking about the photobucket and pasted pictures that end up not being available at a later date as the act of inconsideration. It was not your asking.

Ask away, I do. If you don't, you won't get the answer that you need. I look forward to your contributions and photos.

AMEN!

Jerry, the issue with your pictures had nothing to do with you or your pictures. If you had left them in your post, they would have been approved!

The problem is this...we have a few "trigger words" set which will send a post to the moderation queue for review before posting. Every once in a while, the coding which represents a picture triggers on one of these words. I don't know why it happens and Hoopla Tech Support can't tell me either, but it happens. This is an automatic process...no one here is looking at your pictures making decisions about them.

If you had left your posting alone, one of our moderators would have discovered it and approved it! So how about re-posting the pictures you posted the other day so we can enjoy them? They may go to moderation again because of the image coding issue, but they'll ultimately get approved.

With regard to "discontinuing" your membership, if you don't want to participate here, that is certainly your choice. There is nothing you or we have to do, you just don't participate any more. I certainly hope that does NOT happen.

Jerry Davis,

Don't quit the OGR because of picture posting problems, running a forum like OGR is more complex than you might imagine, there are things that happen in an automatic function, I think you may have set off a couple of the triggers Rich has set up to help

run the forum smoothly.  I post a lot of pictures here on the OGR and had to have Rich guide me thru some of the new procedures myself, take it slow and learn how to post the pictures and everything works out fine.

This is still the best managed forum on the Web!

Rich,

Thank you for the explanation, something that makes sense. I will try again. This time I hope I can do it correctly.

Glad to hear you've stuck around & got the picture thing down at least.

The video doesn't always show in the composing window for me, sometimes it doesn't show till post is submitted (other than the "orange box"). Size of the video, or file type may be holding you up. I haven't read all the posts here, but FYI- Photobucket can get slow, doesn't always do well for me. I download from PB into my pc then upload in attachments.

Hi, Guys,

I need your help to a truly illiterate computer person. I have taken many pictures of my layout on my Apple 6 I phone and could someone kindly take me from there to putting the photos on the OGR Forum for others to enjoy. Thank you for all your help!!!!  John P.Dunn Sr.

John,

When you are posting there is an "add attachments" in the lower right corner of the blue box. If you select it the next step is it wants you to browse your images and select one to load. Try it and let us know where you get hung up. After it loads there will be a box for you to select if you'd like to have it appear full size in your post.

Dear Bobby,

Let us see what happens. I guess my question is now how do I transfer/download photos from my IPhone to the computer so I can attach them to the OGR forum. Thank you, John

That's a mystery question for Steve Jobs!  Doesn't Apple require you to have iTunes (or some sort of Apple only software?) to download images to your computer?

Have you tried doing a post directly from your phone? I see you have some type of photo database attachments on your last post. What are they supposed to be?

Plug in your iPhone to your PC with the USB cable provided with the iPhone.  The iPhone will ask to let the PC access it.  Once you accept, go to explorer and find the iPhone as a drive.  Click until you get to the DCIM folder.  All your pictures are there for copying.

Quick question.. ever since Apple released IOS 11, pictures taken with an iPhone or iPad running IOS 11 or higher store the picture in HEIC format. I tried to upload a picture from my iPhone that was in that format and it doesn't look like OGR Forum likes that format, so I converted the two pictures to PNG format and uploaded them just fine which was no big deal but had to do the conversion and upload from a desktop computer.

Any plans to update the forum software to accept the latest Apple HEIC format since so many people are using smartphones to take pictures or is it even possible?

Thanks,

In the last couple years, Apple has started making the default option HEIF (or HEVC). I upgraded from a 5s to an 11. Here's a screenshot from the camera settings:

That said - even though I have High Efficiency checked, when I use AirDrop to move a pic from the phone to the laptop (Mac), the pic comes over with a .jpg extension. When I open it in Photoshop, it says the color space is Display P3 (because I have PS set to let me know if the image isn't in the working color space I selected).

OK, now I will try to post the same image straight from the phone. Previously was from laptop.

Edit: seems to work OK (viewing on phone and laptop, both from that Cupertino company).

One last image, photo instead of screenshot. Again, straight from photo library on phone.

What a hoot. I am reminded of the old phrase, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”  Apple calls it “High Efficiency” whereas I call it what it is - highly compressed image files that sacrifice image quality to keep file sizes small. This isn’t something new. This is a trade-off that has been part of the process of working in digital imagery ever since digital imagery came on the scene. With regard to Apple’s hyperbole about HEIC, it’s nothing more than attempting to put lipstick on a pig.

If you want the images you take with your phone to be compatible with all the various web formats, then choose “Most Compatible.”

Seems pretty clear and simple to me.

The new Apple format is only offered on the last 2 versions of iPhones and iPads. I switched the camera on the iPhone to most compatible and here is a picture straight from the camera that is being uploaded from the latest version of iPad. It is no big deal, I was curious about support for the newest format, I agree it is better to use JPEG format.

Couldn't have said it better myself, I think you have it! Lipstick on a pig is exactly what it is!

Personally, I'm moving to PNG graphics as they're lossless.  If I happen to decide to edit them a couple of times, I'm not turning my graphics into mush.

The above picture of the C&NW engines was taken with my iPhone XR and is in JPEG format and is a 3.4MB size file. The APPLE HEIF (compressed) file would be about 1/10 of that size. I suspect that 95% of all Apple iPhone users that take pictures are doing so to upload them to social media websites or email/text them to friends. They probably couldn't care less about "quality". Apple is probably doing most iPhones users a favor since most users are on limited data plans and/or running out of space on their phones. All major social media sites can handle the new Apple picture format. The iPhone X series and iPhone 11 series have nice resolution cameras and take great pictures but do create larger size files using JPEG format.

And there, in one sentence, is a PERFECT description of the millennial generation.

Let's do a side by side comparison. Here' s my original jpg, which is a 193K file.

And here is the same image, compressed down to a 31K file.
CO Hudson jpg Test

If you don't see the difference in the quality of these images, or if you see it but it doesn't bother you, welcome to the millennial generation.

Hard drive and device memory cost is cheap today. There's no need to sacrifice quality just to save a few bytes of memory!
