Postwar E Unit

Make sure everything is in alignment, lay it on its side on a block of wood and gently tap it together with a small hammer.

There was a trick posted not long ago in running a long #2 screw through the plunger slots to keep everything together while aligning the drum and finger boards. I've never used a hammer to snap an E-unit frame back together.

I've had success with a small vise with padded jaws. 

As mentioned above, make sure everything is in alignment and squeeze gently.

Got a new way to put this back together, vice-grips. Gradually increase the grip, constantly checking and adjusting the fit of all components.

Now in putting this back together, I find I have a wire just hanging out. One end is attached to the center of the lower frame (see the lower arrow pointing from the right), I have now clue where the other end (upper left arrow) needs to attach. Because the one end is attached to the frame, I want to say it is a ground wire, but maybe not as the attachment point is above where the pickup rollers are.   

Any thoughts?

I use a pair of channel-lock pliers.  I get everything close to where they should be and while squeezing a bit to hold everything fairly tight, I make final adjustments and then snap it shut.  Often times, I need to realign the locking pin at the last moment, before it locks into place.  A third hand would help.   Good luck.

Does that loose wire get connected to the roller pickups? If so, then the loose end gets connected to the solder connector on the side of the 'E' unit.

I found I had taken a picture before I started, I totally forgot about it, and the black wire IS attached to the solder connector on the side of the E unit, where the smoke unit and headlight are also connected. Thanks for your help.
