I started work this evening on a Picatinny Arsenal switcher - Lionel #42.   Plaicng it on the track and applying power, I heard the sound of a motor running but no there was no motion.  Looking inside, I saw that the gear on the axle was stripped - with brass dust next to it in the chassis.

The way this unit is built, replacing the gear isn't a simple task.   The axle runs through the frame with gear in the middle and the wheels outside the frame.  Has anyone done such a replacement.  I can see a brute force way to deal with this one but would like to hear how anyone else has solved this problem.

First you need a proper wheel puller to get one wheel off the axle.  Then with a long, thin punch that will fit through the axle bearing, punch the axle out of the gear and out the other bearing.

Reverse the procedure to install the axle into the new gear.

Not easy, you need three hands, but it can be done. I have done it.
