I think that black, or dark gray, if available, would be suitable for hige voltage transmission lines. The green would be appropriate for trackside telegraph lines. The telegraph lines along the PRR had no insulation and the oxidized copper was green. I don't know if the wires never had insulation or if it just rotted off.

EZ line isnt wire, its an elastic string. It feels and acts like the elastic strands in your socks. I have a roll of the "large" size charcoal, and its fairly dark. I think it would work fine for power lines.
Per the instructions, you superglue it to the poles and string it along, without stretching it (so if something falls on it, it has its elastic give). I havent used it for phone line, but it works for flat car tie downs.
Power lines, at least now adays, are bare aluminum. So, depending on which way the sun is shining, they look either silver or black.
I worked for the power company for four years during my college days as a Groundman. Power lines up until the late 60's were mainly copper, hence the green color from oxidation. New lines beginning in the late 60's were and are aluminum. The early telephone/telegraph wires were copper, and later became stranded wires bundled in a black insulation. High tension wires were aluminum. For reapires we had to carry both copper and AL on the truck since the two could not be mixed.
So if your are modeling Steam era use green, if not balck will do as Vulcan indicated.
That should be good since you can cover just about all the bases. I'm getting ready to string mine too and I am using large green EZ Line. Need to pick up some more poles. Will also add an Artista Lineman climbing one of the poles for a "repair".
I have the new lionel scale poles with transformers and such attached to them. they have tiny holes already drilled into the insulators. Do you think that the E-Z Wire will be able to thread through these pre-drilled holes? Or is super glue the only way to go?
Great!!!! Thanks for the info!
not sure about power but i do know that phone lines 1970 were black the copper was almost gone back then i worked as a lineman for n.y. telephone good luck
