I just purchased Lionel's 6-14295 (#990 LEGACY® Command Set) because I have several locomotives that can use this technology. Those locomotives are:

6-28272 - I Love U.S.A. Conventional SD60 Locomotive

6-28347 - Union Pacific Boy Scouts of America® LEGACY ES44AC Diesel Locomotive

6-34618 - UP George Bush LEGACY SD70ACe Locomotive

6-34755 - Alaska LEGACY Scale C-420 Locomotive

I have the following power sources available:

MTH 40-1001 - Z1000 Brick

6-14198 - CW-80 80-watt Transformer

I also have the MTH 50-1017 (TIU/Barrel Jack Adapter Cable) available.

In the past I have used the MTH 40-1001 to power my layout in conjunction with the MTH 50-1001 (DCS Remote Control System which includes the MTH 50-1002 [DCS Remote Control Handheld Unit] and 50-1003 [DCS Track Interface Unit (TIU)]).

The last couple of days I've been running the 6-34618 using the 6-14198, but seems to run erratically (maybe not a good sine-wave output?).

Now I'd like to program the 6-34618 to be used with the 6-14295 and put one of the other Lionel locomotives on the track and program it also to run with the 6-14295.

I was looking at the power output on the MTH 40-1001 and see it has two outputs:

a. 18v which has the barrel connector which normally plugs into the MTH 50-1003 via the MTH 50-1017 [TIU/Barrel Jack Adapter Cable].

b. 14v which has terminals labeled HOT and COM.

I'm thinking the track needs 18v to properly run the Lionel locomotives.

Was wondering if I could plug the MTH 40-1001 to the 50-1003 (TIU) and then to the track if that would work.

I'm thinking the 6-14295 (Lionel Legacy Cab-2) does not need a separate power supply; only power connected to the track (plus the cable to send the signal to the track).

 My layout isn't too big - approximately 8" x 6.5'

Yes.

Use the Z-1000 brick only with the 50-1017 to the fixed in #1.

Use the fixed out 1 to the track.

Connect the Legacy base track wire to the Fixed Out 1  Black terminal on the TIU with the track Black wire.

You should be able to operate 2 locomotives at the same time.

Use the CW-80 ACC output for accessory power. That can be adjusted if needed.

Thanks to moonman I have it wired up.

Was successful in running 6-83605 (LionChief™ Plus Mikado Presidents Steam Locomotive) using the universal remote (6-83071).

Then I placed 6-34618 (UP George Bush LEGACY SD70ACe Locomotive) on the tracks. Powered everything up including the 6-14295 (#990 LEGACY® Command Set).

The UP sat there flickering. When I powered the Cab-2, it said Cab-1 mode for the engine (page 12 of the 6-14295 User's Manual).

Not sure the next steps. I'm thinking I need to use the orange module and provide the 6-14295 with all the loco info. Is this correct?

Referencing page 12 I could not find the Start-up button (figure 3 page 12). What am I missing?

Hi PAULP575,

I noticed this comment from your original post-

I'm thinking the 6-14295 (Lionel Legacy Cab-2) does not need a separate power supply; only power connected to the track (plus the cable to send the signal to the track).

The power supply that came with the 6-14295 must be plugged in and connected to the Legacy base. It requires power to operate.

You may need to program the engine with an id#. It is ENG #1 by default from the factory. Press ENG and then the 1 button to address the engine and bring up the key menu with the start up button. Pressing the horn button will also start it up.

The blinking light could be that it is in a programming mode.

Switch it to PROG , under a roof hatch, turn on Legacy base, turn on transformer, then follow the instructions to assign an iD #. This one just begs for #41. Then power off the transformer, switch the Prog/RUN switch back to run. Power on the transformer and press ENG 4 1 on the remote.

That should start it up.

Now, you can follow the instructions for loading the orange module info for ENG #41

Thanks moonman - everything seems to be working except -- it's locked into Cab-1 mode.

I was able to select the loco by pressing 4 1 on the key pad. Is this the best way to select the loco? I noticed on the bottom of the screen there are several boxes and the furthest right on is labeled Eng. When I press the button below it it changes to E1 and the space immediately above it shows "2" and the screen shoes Cab1 Mode".

If I keep pressing that button it changes from E1 (which shows on the top of the screen "

I was able to use the orange engine module and load the options, but every time I apply power to the track and Legacy base it shows "Cab-1".

Totally confused! Maybe I need to delete everything and start over?

YEAH, THAT HAPPENS. We all were at first.

Go through the Legacy book and find the section for manually changing the setup for an engine. If you learn it now, it will help later. The engine instruction book cuts through some of the reading. That can be used, too.

You can program the options to legacy/Cab2 - mode and such

work with Engine ID 41 as it is already programmed for that.

You can delete the engine ID and start over from the beginning of the book.

it is homework time

I thought I has it figured out, but nope - no good.

So I tried to clear out everything and start over; that didn't work; 41 is still in the remote. I did this by continuously pressing the scroll button until I came to the "System Settings" screen that displayed "Clear Database Clears all settings" plus the warning. I pressed the center button (immediately below the word CLEAR that is in a box). I was asked "Are you sure" and pressed the button immediately below the YES box. Remote responds by displaying "Clearing DB. Then I'm back at the warning screen.

When I turn the remote on I see:

Lionel Cab1 Mode in the display screen.

On the bottom right of the display screen (above the last button in the row I see):

ENG in reverse and immediately about that the number 2. What is that?

If I press thebutton below that, it changes to E1 and immediately above that the 2 is blinking.

UUUUUUgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I know why MTH touts their remote as very user-friendly. I was able to work well with the MTH remote and have already programmed several engine.

In your first reply to my post, you mentioned "You should be able to operate 2 locomotives at the same time". Once I get 4141 figured out, can I program more than two engine into the remote? I'm thinking I can but not sure.

Thanks for all that info.

I had previously downloaded all those video in spite of their poor quality. I also downloaded the complete user's guide after Lionel Customer Service told me there are no printed guides (really disappointed they don't provide a printed guide especially due to the size of this guide). The video that showed what's in the box shows a guide - apparently out of date.

I'm going to put the videos on my laptop so I can have them close by when I start over.

Maybe my problems stem from the batteries needing charging? I'm doing that right now, but even with fresh batteries (fully charged), the remote showed the battery symbol.

Today I wanted to check the Train Brake Slider so move it and it appears it may not be functioning properly. Shouldn't it have some resistance? I moved it and it moves without any resistance from the minus to the plus.

The sage continues . . . . . . .

It is saga, not sage.  it is only a saga because you are not taking it in the proper order or taking the time to read. The legacy manual that is included with the #990 set and the instruction booklet that is included with the engine describe all that you need to know.

Go back to the set up of the #990 and start from there.

It is much simpler than DCS. Plug in the power to the base. One wire to the outside rail. Turn on remote. Turn on the transformer. Go.

First post! Excuse my newbie ness!

Ok, I know this is a bit of a necro-post, but I just want to make 100% sure I know what I am doing

I have a z1000 transformer. It ends up having red and black wires. I will run the z1000 barrel (50-1017, these were impossible to find, but luckily I got them from Canada!!) to the 1017, to the fixed 1.

My lionel fastrack terminal section ONLY takes the black, to fixed out 1 (I have a spade to banana plug converter). The red wire from the fastrack terminal is NOT used, at all. (Not really sure how that works?)

This is true regardless of if I run Legacy  trains, or MTH trains, (or conventional? the manual is a little confusing) in DCS handheld mode.

Fastrack switches use the AIU with red and black off the switches (or other accessories) hardlined into the connection bank.

The AIU gets a phone line type (RJ11) connection between the AIU and the TIU to power the AIU bank.

The AIU is powered by AUX input Z500 or 750 to TIU barrel input on the TIU labeled Aux Input).

That cover all of it? I just got my 1017s, my DCS 50-1001 (L unit), my fastrack (its getting hard to find MTH stuff, and apparently fastrack is pretty reliable), already have my z1000 brick, and my old ~60s conventional trains. I want to testdrive with the old conventional trains and the dcs handheld before I drop some $$ on PS2 or PS3 mth trains. At some point I will want to pick up 1 or 2 Legacy trains as well (have that adapter already), but really want to make absolutely sure I know what I am doing first.

Thank you all!

Little bit hard to follow, but here's how I connect my MTH and Lionel. The big thing to remember is to use the same colored wire (red/black or white) goes to the same side):

Hope this helps with at least part of your connections.

Here's another drawing - from MTH - that shows what you need to connect MTH and Lionel) - which I think you have got covered:

This is a great diagram! So I understand, you are running the power brick to both the fixed and variable in 1?

Otherwise, the rest makes perfect sense!

When I bought either the DCS Remote or the TIU, I also bought the companion guide (60-1386 - DCS Companion Book 3rd Edition). Therein is a diagram that shows how to make those connections.

Wiring through a Variable Channel Only

I use method 1 and it works fine.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that you need to ensure your track voltage is set to zero if you are using a locomotive in conventional mode; otherwise the loco MAY take off at high speed as soon as the power is applied.
