One of the Casey Jones High Railers picked up a Lionel # 38053 NYC scale Mohawk in the Atlanta TCA convention trading hall.

We gave it a test run on the modular layout and ran into a little problem. All Rail sounds and TMCC functions worked with the exception of the whistle. It would not work when we pushed the whistle button on the Cab 1.

I decided to try the reset function. When I addressed the engine during the reset procedure the whistle blew as normal when addressing the engine. I stopped the reset procedure at that point and placed the engine back in run. When I pressed the whistle button, still no whistle.

I put the engine back into program and started the reset procedure again. Once again the whistle blew when I entered the engine ID. I continued through the complete reset procedure. The whistle blew when I entered “74”, the reset code for this engine. When I put the engine back into run, still no whistle.

The only thing I did not try was to attempt to blow the whistle in conventional mode. Even if it  works in conventional mode something is wrong with Rail Sounds in the TMCC mode.

Can someone help with this problem? The Rail Sounds board in my Lionel #38053 NYC scale Mohawk also failed a few years back, but when it died all Rail sounds were garbled and uncontrollable from the Cab 1. Davis Trains replaced a couple of chips on the Rail Sounds board and the engine has worked fine ever since. Now that Davis Trains is long gone I am not sure where to tell my friend to send the engine for repair. Lionel maybe?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

Are you sure its not a faulty whistle button on the cab one, is the base blinking when you press the whistle button? When you reprogram the loco you aren't using the whistle button ,its being activated by the set button. Just a thought, I had a TMCC remote with a whistle button that quit working, opened it up and cleaned the contacts with an eraser as discussed here on the forum and it worked fine.

Also try resetting the engine to aux 4 instead of aux 74. Aux 4 is the more generic steam engine with smoke setting. That might pinpoint if its an R2LC issue. Apologies, but this is done right after you hit

ENG xx set

with the engine in program mode.
