Hello all,

The upper level is now  operational, and is connected to the lower main lines. One video you will see the VL Hudson running around the upper level. The second video you will see the VL BB starting on the inner main crossing over to the outer main , then  ascending up to the upper level , then returning to the lower outer main.

Hope you all enjoy.

Thanks for looking !!

Alex

Alex,

Both locomotives are great, and the layout is shaping up very nicely!  It is so satisfying to get things far enough along where you can run some trains.

I too have questions about the bridges.  I see those super looking arch bridges and then the spans between the piers.  The piers appear to be basically as they will look when finished.  That makes me think the spans between them will be girder bridges.  Am I correct?

I came from a background of HO trains, and read too many Model Railroader Magazine articles since about 1967 or 1968.  Based on that reading, I would have never wanted an upper level with bridges over much of the layout.  After going on 5 years in O gauge 3-rail, I am getting to the point where I am thinking more freely to do as I like.  Pondering how I will fit what I want in an 11 x 11 room, I am starting to think an overhead second level may be in my future.

I'm looking forward to your updates and photos from the open house.  Keep having those open houses, and we we may take a trip up your way when I retire.

Hello everyone, thank you all for the very kind comments !!!

TrainLover, the arched viaducts are from Bridge Boss, all the rest of the upper support system is scratch built.

Mark, thanks.  The Arched viaducts are from Bridge Boss, the piers will remain as they are. As for the sections between the piers, in the future i might add thicker sides to make it look like girder bridges, but for now it will stay like it is.

Scott, it's a U shaped dog bone configuration with two lower main lines and one upper main line. It all connects together and trains can be reversed in either direction.

Well I hope my math is right here...

The run of 13 feet is 624 ' in O scale.

The rise of 6.75 inches is 27' in O scale.

Rise / Run = 0.0432 or 4.32%

So the grade is a 4.32 grade.

Now for all the math majors out there if I did this incorrectly please correct me as I make lots and lots of mistakes.

Mark

Round it up to 4.33%  (.0432692307692308). I use inches.
