I had not posted any pictures of progress / changes on the layout since December until my post yesterday showing additional pictures of the Rossback/Roman skyscraper which is in run 279.  So....here are some pictures of a project I did in January..."The Silver Tower".  The windows of the tower are made of reflective duct tape I purchased at Wally World and the window design is done with automobile striping tape.  The base structure upon which the tape is applied is a free standing store display roughly one foot square by 5 feet tall.  The decorative roof is made from a re-purposed light cover and will provide a dome of light on top of the tower once I get the wiring done.  I plan on flooding the tower with mini led work lights to enhance its reflectivity.  Hope you enjoy the shots and thanks for taking the time to look!

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Art...thanks for the encouragement.  I took a break because the forum had consumed so much of my time in the evening hours that I wasn't getting anything done on the layout and for that matter anything else!..LOL!!  As far as the recent posters that are absent right now, I wish them the best.  One thing for sure, this forum is still the best place to be for O-gauge trains because it has guys like you that make it so great!!

Mark...thank you....funny that you should mention the Jetsons and landing pads, etc.  Kenner made skyscraper building sets that came with Jetson-like vehicles that traveled on mono-track.  There were landing pads and satellite antennas, etc. in these sets.  The sets were called "Skyrail"....pretty neat.

Excellent work!  It's fantastic to see what can be done from salvaged materials and ingenuity.

As for the Girder and Panel kits. The brand to look for right now is "Power Trains" or "Power Construction City" which is the name they have most recently been sold under, though you can still order them from the manufacturer under the original name.  Around here they mostly sold out last summer, but some are still show up from time to time available quite cheaply.  I bought 5 of the "add-on" sets for $3 and a bridge set that showed up at Goodwill.

The only problem is the polypropylene plastic which doesn't generally take paint well, though Krylon Fusion sticks pretty well.

Because Of The Smith Tower..

The Stutz is really cool!  It could be the showpiece in Alan's fire department next to the Jetson's flying Fire vehicle.  Did the Jetsons ever have a flying fire vehicle?

You're welcome!  You're use of the system is some of the most impressive I've seen.  In the past I've mostly used them for smaller sci-fi wargaming projects.

For those not familiar with the line, I just checked the TRU website and it looks like they still have some on sale.  The Super Skyscraper looks like it would be an amazing deal at $17 and has many uses beyond skyscrapers.

Unfortunately it's an "in progress" model so it doesn't have enough panels to cover the whole building.

Luckily you can get a packs of panels direct from the manufacturer http://www.bridgestreettoys.co...ts&search=action

or at the TRU price, you could just buy more of the skyscraper sets!

Eilif,

This skyscraper set looks very much like plastic building sets my brother and I had when we were kids in the '60s.  The girders were all gray to simulate steel, and snapped together in a similar way.  There were plastic panels to snap onto the sides.  We didn't have much of a selection of panels.  I built a number ad buildings, then tore them down before moving on to other things.  Every so often the set comes to mind.  I assume my mother threw them out long ago.  I don't know if I will ever get one for the layout, but thank you very much for showing the links.
