After a short run it makes a squaking noise and stops, why not from the start? I have looked for the views of it, but not getting Lionel to recognize it. I intend to remove the drivers and groove them for tires. I believe they need to be indexed, correct? Thanks

Squeaking is probably due to needing a lube job.
pulling wheels requires quartering.( or as you call it, indexing) if you’ve never done this sort of task before, best to learn how to use the proper tools and techniques, or let a professional do the task.....

Here is the parts view of the Lionel 6-18010 steam turbine locomotive.
Oil all parts that turn in a bearing (axles, motor armature) and grease any gears.
Labelle makes a good set of lubricants for our trains.
Clean all wheels and your track with Naphtha. That will help your traction. No need for traction tires.

I’d second that Larry, ....good call....maybe one less turbine will wind up in a shoe box 😁..
