What's the difference between the L1 and the L1s

Legacy PRR L1 and L1s
The s had a superheater. I think all of the L1 had a superheater.
On the PRR, all 575 of them were L1s.
All were L1s, but not all were the same. Initially, many still had oil headlamps and no power reverse. In the mid-30s they started to get stokers. They all had flangeless 2nd and 3rd drivers when built, but starting during WWII they got all flanged drivers over time. Sometime after WWII, many got the much bigger, roomy doghouse (Lionel's model has the old claustrophobic doghouse). After the L1s, all PRR steamers were superheated so the 's' was dropped.
More L1s trivia then you probably wanted.
Thanks for that info. Interesting how PRR was always changing engine gear and updating.
