Enjoyed Josey Wales' last working steam shed video. Soaked with steam atmosphere. Oh, to go back to a busy steam-era terminal on my favorite road! (alas, I have about 10 favorite roads, so I would be a pretty busy bee, shuttling from terminal to terminal, in my time machine!) Also enjoyed the honest-to-goodness "steam" crane, with the furious exhaust when doing a lift. Almost sounded like a steam V8!
U ain't gettin' the PRR collection at Strasburg running! H10s ...you say? Cost more to fix the old one and get it FRA correct than built it new ! Those units were totaled when they were retired anyway. And even IF you could...the amount of Pa. politics you'd unleash would flatten the whole thing later, if not sooner !

I was thinking getting that collection visually restored, and INSIDE, not for them to run. There are too many steamers which could be restored for display, and not to run.
Too bad you can't have ANY of those other engines! The K4s, M1b, G5s and whatever else you like won't pass FRA regs. They are SHOT ! PRR took too many shortcuts in their original design and construction...and why not? They were Never expected to run for sixty to eighty years! Only way you can do 'em today is with a completely redesigned and rebuilt firebox area or run at a reduced level of steam pressure. As for the GG1, as much as I'd LOVE to see that happen...it can't without all new motors and wiring throughout. The Penn is over folks...hoist those crying towels! Only way out is an all new chooch, if we're gonna be realistic. And that means a brand new T1 or J1, as these guys were up to snuff when built. Not all that bad either...as these two were the Penn's two best steamers anyway! Flame suit on !
If you do have a steamer, most of the general public would not know, or care, who built or owned the locomotive!
Hot Water - Thanks for the AFT info. Been wondering about alot of that stuff for decades. Naturally, I was never going to get the real story from RR or BB. And 2101 and 2100 were in Striegel's scrap yard in Baltimore.
Don't some of you know that PRR/LIRR G5s #39 is going to be restored and operated at Strasburg PA? I know the funding is going slowly, but at least its moving.
LI 39 will have to run at reduced pressure, but in a Strasburg only invironment, that won't be too bad. Those early Penn designs were good, or at least OK for their day, but require changes in boiler/firebox to be current with today's regulations. I'd love to see a new built H10s buzzing around various old Penn locations....without the issues that would dog 7688 if you tried to fix her. As for a cosmetic restorations, great! But lets get a roof over their collective heads first, so we don't have to redo the whole thing fifteen years later!

Do you know that for absolute SURE?? The Strasburg shop COULD replace the too-thin crown sheet and wrapper sheet of the firebox, per current FRA design safety factors.
Sure they could, but that would constitute a redesign....same issue that effects 1361, if she ever would get to being fixed. If somebody gets an approved FRA redesign for the PRR family of steamers, then with enough dough, you could get 'em all working again. I still think a new built H10s would be the hot set-up...with a number of largely invisible improvements and up-grades.

Come on, all your double talk STILL didn't answer my question, above, i.e. how do you know that the Strasburg Steam Shop will NOT rebuild the Long Island #39 correctly, in order to comply with current FRA requirements???
IF they don't redesign and rebuild to that design... that places them in an FRA violation if they run full pressure....and that won't be up to the Strasburg shop, but rather those who are paying for it. It could go either way, and AFAIK, that has not been determined yet. Strasburg could operate the 39 either way. If this still doesn't answer your question, then call them up( SRR), or get a new question !
On the other hand hope it is O.K. to post what I heard without your permission.
You are more than welcome to post whatever you desire, no mater factual or not.
Now I'm not saying that Ross Rowland has ever threatened to sue me for slander (not libel, apparently) over posts on an internet forum, but some guy who ran a lot of excursions with other people's money and has had himself and his equipment banned from more than one railroad threatened to sue me for slander in the late 90s when I was the moderator of the chaski railfan forum.

If you are implying that a certain individual may "come after me" as a result of my previous posts,,,,,,well I wouldn't mind that at all. All that individual would have to do would be to present the clearance drawing of SP4449, and then I could present the ORIGINAL, un-doctored, Southern Pacific GS-4 clearance diagram. Case closed!!

Here is a shot of the new, redesigned roof sheet being test fitted to #39's boiler. It will allow her to operate at her full pressure of 205 PSI. It's not a big deal to do alterations of this nature if they are planned for in advance and properly engineered.

Mr. Anderson,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I didn't figure that jaygee knew what he was talking about, and was just making an assumption about what he THOUGHT was going on at the Strasburg Steam Shop.
Sometimes it is better to keep ones mouth shut and be thought an idiot, than open ones mouth and remove all doubt!
I believe the #39 has been a the Strasburg Steam Shop for many years. The "other" G5 may still be out on Long Island, I think.
Being a closet Pennsy freak, that is great news! I was there three years ago, and if the G5 was there then they had it well hidden.
I still say that the T1 trust ought to have a bulletproof way to transfer funds to another restoration as above if the project undergoes meltdown before they pour the main frames.
I stands corrected! Or better informed now. Glad to see they will be doing the slight redesign approach, as this open up some some interesting possibilities for the future.
Still holding out for a scratch built PRR H8/9/10 type 2-8-0 someday!
