I have an MTH EMD F-40PH Metra engine and am having trouble with the PS-1 passenger station announcements.  It's worked fine for years and now suddenly in order to get the announcement to work I need to go through the annoying "clinks and clanks" to factory default at "18" to get the announcement to work and then it will only work once.  The next time I try to enable them by pressing and holding the bell button for more than 3 secs they won't work.    I've gone through the PS-1 directions (not an easy read) and am coming up blank with each try.  Any suggestions?

I know PS-1 is a "pain" Hence the reason for PS-2 and PS-3.

Can a PS-1 be upraded to PS-2 or better yet TMCC and still use the same passenger announcements?  My layout is "Chicago based" so the Metra commuter announcements are perfect for me.  Well nearly so,  I never heard a Metra conductor say "baggage to the right"  !!

Readingfan and Marty,

Thanks for the reply.  I do have a BCR in the engine.  Did that a few years ago.  I will  reseat the chip. I assume it's the one marked F40-PH.  I tried it again yesterday and once again after the reset it worked once.  Ran it several minutes around the route, activated the station announcements by 3 seconds+ on the bell....no announcements.  All the other sounds work; horn, bell, squeaking breaks, chatter in neutral.

I'll give J and W Electronics a call.  Again, thanks for your advice.

What transformer are you using, have you tried one with a different bell button.  Also, try reset 28 with the instructions to ensure PFA is enabled.  The reset 18 should do it, but there have been other engines features that reset 18 didnot take care of.

This is an odd one, and I am not sure why the engine can't read the bell button to accept activating PSA except after a reset 18, but only once.

To rule out a hardware or software feature, I would try the chip in a different engine and a different chip in the current engine.   They need to be same MTH vintage and memory.  If this is a 1997 or newer engine, that would be the latest and greatest for PS-1.

The above helps isolate a deffective chip or a hardware issue with top board.   G
