Hello everybody,

I'm sorry for getting carried away with having the same topic on two threads.

For those of us who are new to the Hobby and have early PS2 engines with the 5 volt battery please advise;

1. Your recommendation on what battery to replace the old one would be.  nimh bcr supercap or others ?

2. A good source to get these batteries from.

3. Any recommendations for care on these engines with the 5 volt batteries.

Thanks, and PLEASE DO remind me when I do something  on the threads that is not right. Your replies are very, very well received from  people that are just starting layouts !!

Best to everybody , Jerry

Jerry, What is the best motor oil?   You will get answers all over the board on this question.  I would just use an MTH battery.  Others use all sorts of batteries.  As long as good quality you will be fine.  Not much you can do in the area of care for the electronics.  Just same as any thing.  Good transformer with fast acting breaker, add a TVS to the track input.  Don't derail your engine.  G

Hi Barry,

Are the J&W supercapacitors basically the same that are used on PS3 engines and would you recommend them for my PS2 8.4 volt engine.

I just received a new 20 3069 Triplex with the 8.4 volt battery. It is never been run or charged. I did get a hold of a NEW MTH green BG 4000005 8.4 V that was initially charged  Feb 2015 and never used . Please advise if you think I should use that battery and how to put a charge on it before I start running the locomotive. I still do not have MTH DCS system yet but I plan on getting one very shortly. Again, I do have the latest MTH companion manual and it is great.

Thank you very much for bearing with me as I am new to this Hobby and plan to get involved much deeper with MTH Trains.

Awaiting your reply, much thanks again, Jerry

See my post above yours.

The 8.4 volt version of J&W's BCR would be OK

There's nothing wrong with the green MTH battery. Just charge it and use it.

If you have a good battery, I would just charge it and use it, as Barry says.  I wouldn't spend money to replace it unless, after it is charged, it doesn't work properly; no point in spending money unnecessarily on an 8.4-volt battery system , which has uncertain life expectancy.  You can charge it with an MTH charger, or let it sit on a powered track for a bit.  You can run it conventionally.

WARNING:  Before you place the loco on the track, be sure that fluid is added to the smoke unit, so you don't damage it.  If need be, I would also turn down the sound if very loud, to protect the speaker.

Thanks guys for the replies. Looking forward to getting my DCs unit in the fall. Too busy now to do anything but work on home stuff and spending time on the layout to get it ready . Using post-war tubular track and many 072/022 switches and having some issues with those. Mainly derailing issues .

Again your replies are very very well appreciateed,  best to all, Jerry
