Hello all,

I recently purchased a new PS2 MTH Triplex engine which has the 8.4 volt battery. I want to replace it and would like to be advised as the easiest way to do so. The battery I'm getting is a super cap and it is a direct replacement. Looking at the owner's manual as far as battery replacement is concerned is hard to understand and I am  having a a hard time seeing  the illustration. I am a little nervous about doing this because  obviously I don't want to remove the tender. Please advise  how to remove and replace the battery in this engine. Visual help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much, Jerry

I did one earlier today.  Remove the front set of drivers and the bracket that holds the driver attachment mount.  Two screws must be removed from the plastic battery bracket.  Lift out and in my case install a new MTH green battery.

I wish I saw your post earlier so I could take a photo for you.  It is very easy to do.

Chuck, the first Triplex was a PS-2  5 volt board.  I currently have one.  The battery is in the locomotive and not the tender.  It is located under (with engine inverted) the front set of drivers inside the boiler.  The battery charging port is located in the tender.  That location may confuse guys to think the battery is also located in the tender.  It is where I stated.  Over the years, I have worked on a great many of these locomotives and they are all the same.

Marty, that's an interesting pearl of wisdom.   I would have also thought the battery was in the tender as I've never worked on one of these.

The RK Imperial model was PS2 3 volt, however, all of the Premier PS2 models were 5 volt.

Barry, it actually appears that only the original release was a 5V system, there are 2003 and 2008 models that are 3V, at least according to the MTH website:  http://mthtrains.com/20-3101-1  http://mthtrains.com/20-3361-1

John, what throws people off is the charging jack in the tender.  People expect the battery to be with it.  As complicated as these look, they come apart with no big problems.

A general heads up on this engine.  If you get the early (great running) one, please replace the battery with a new battery or whatever you feel ok with.  My engine got a new green MTH battery yesterday.  I get to see these with blown electronics because people go right for the charging jack and feel good about it with the old white battery.
