hi all. My original r-32 subway engine (ps-2) board died after many wonderful years of service so I figured I'd get it repaired. The service center told me there were no longer any replacement five volt boards, so they recommended I do a ps-3 replacement upgrade. Well, I picked it up and took it home, only to realize that the center of the train was bulging out on both sides. A more detailed inspection revealed that the speaker is just too big for the subway and is pushing the shell out. I'm going to contact the repair guy on Monday, but was wondering if someone here could tell me if mth makes a slightly smaller diameter speaker that would fit in this subway (the r-32 with the opening doors)? I figured I could let him know the proper speaker to get and maybe move this along a little quicker. Thanks in advance.

The PS3 upgrade kit comes with a 50mm diameter, 4 ohm speaker. The service tech should have picked up the bulging sides and never returned the subway car that way. He should have 40 and 45mm diameter speakers in his shop. If not, he can get them.

Thanks for the quick reply Bruce. I'm going to point that out to him when I call on Monday. I was worried that they only had one size speaker for the ps-3 boards. Glad to see they have the 40 and 45 mm. It looks like he installed the 50mm.
In this case it is not the smaller speaker that is needed. The kit is using the 50mm BF-0000043 speaker which has a metal enclosure that starts right at the edge of the speaker. The older BF-0000034 speaker is also 50mm, but only has center magnet and the height of the speaker at the edge is much lower.
He should have used a BF-34 speaker to prevent fit interference with the interior assembly. G
G, I was told that my old speaker would not work with PS3 . Is the bf-34 speaker a new version and comparable with ps-3? My old speaker was removed and discarded.
Not to confuse you, but your original speaker is 16 ohms and has to be discarded. PS-2 3V and PS-3 use a 4 ohm speaker. There are 2 50mm versions. BF-34 and BF-43. I bet the kit had the BF-43, but a 34 looks like your original. The 34 fits, but the 43 won't. Picture attached to show difference. G

Got it G. Much appreciated. I haven't been on this board in a while, but guys like you make this a valuable resource to the hobby. I love this Subway and have run the heck out of it. It's the first one mth did with the opening doors, making the fit of the speaker key. Unfortunately, I don't think many subway fans in south Florida are doing these PS3 conversions, so the authorized tech that MTH referred me to probably hasn't done a subway yet. This is most helpful. I'll let him know to get the BF-0000034.
I think it is obvious as others have said, if something doesn't fit it should not be used. The tech should have realized that. G
Thanks GGG. I told him about the speaker and finally had a chance to run my upgraded R-32 subway. He did a great job with the new speaker and the thing runs like a charm. It also sounds better than it ever has. If anyone is hesitating to do a ps-3 upgrade in a subway, don't. I'm so glad I did.
