I had the opportunity to purchase the subject observation car, Lionel #2227020 at the Allentown Show this past weekend. I found that parts (or something)  was rattling around the inside of the box. Turned out that cut pieces of the plastic inside container were rattling around the box. One of the marker lights (one of the added rear lanterns) was missing from the car. The cut plastic pieces were "punched out" by the now missing lantern. The missing lantern was not in the box.

I had to inspect two other cars before I found one that did not have a missing lantern. All of the cars reviewed had inside plastic containers, which had punch-thru marks where the lantern meets the plastic container. In both cases the missing lantern was on the closed card stock side and not the viewing side off the box.

It appears that the packer of these cars decided that the same plastic packaging that is used for the currently available heavy weight cars is also used for the observations cars without concern for the clearance necessary for the separately mounted lanterns on the rear of the car.

Suggest that you review all observation car purchases as soon as you can.

I realize this is a small issue compared to the need to flip the interior, but to me,  its ust another brick in wall. Adds insult to injury.

This is exactly why I recently canceled my pre-order of the Strasburg Decapod. To me, at nearly $2k, it's not worth the risk or the hassle. A few days ago, a friend of mine told me he never buys the "first run" of anything. If anyone wants to take a chance on it, Charles Ro will likely now have an extra Decapod on hand when they come in, although I'm sure it is already spoken-for. I'm going to stick with the older trains until quality improves.

I'm on the fence about doing the same.  I have it on pre order but I'm honestly scared to drop that much on an engine given the recent quality issues.  Both my Strasburg observations are back at Lionel after spending nearly 400 on both cars.  I'm not sure what to do as far as #90

I can understand the apprehension around the Legacy #90. I am hoping that the delay in this engine is a sign that they are working to get it right. My order will stay intact, and I am optimistic about the engine.
One question that I have, when these topics arise about packaging or quality control, does anyone notify Lionel?  Dave and Ryan are on this forum. When we have there issues, they should be told.
