Hi, I run SuperO track. Sliding shoe pickups don't work their best on that trackage. I have a 221 loco & want to convert the slider shoe pickups to roller pickups. Has anybody ever actually done that? What rollers did you use? This loco motor is very similar to the early 2026 with sliders. Has anyone did it on those? Thanks.

There is no way to convert to rollers. It is already a tight fit between the rear slider and trailing truck screw, any type of roller assembly will not clear the screw. The only suggestion I can offer is bend the sliding shoe downward a bit, and if it stalls on Super O switches, add a plug and wire assembly between the loco and tender and use the tender pick-ups as an auxiliary pick-up. If it is a 221T without a whistle, add a pick-up to the front truck.

Thanks Guys, I was getting the impression I was going to have to run a jumper from tender rollers. I just wanted to avoid that if possible. Looks like not possible.

As a point of information with SuperO, if the center rail is just cleaned with a scothbrite pad or the like, the sliders are not too bad. But on 4-5 laps with a roller loco will make the sliders not contact well. If you run lots of roller locos, then put on the slider loco, it will hardly move. Fastrack tends to do this also, but not nearly as bad.

  Very best, Don
