Just picked up a PW 3472 operating milk car with original box.  It was a spur of the moment purchase and I think I have every thing there, car and the metal stand to receive the cans.  There are no directions with it.  Can anyone help me with directions as to whether or not I have everything and also how to operate it and what else I might need. Thanks

Bruce

You just need an operating track section like a UCS and some milk cans, which are inserted laying down in the roof of the car. The wires on the UCS pass through the milk stand frame below. For 0 guage you use the top holes in the stand for the platform, for 027 the lower slots. You car may need rewiring and service.

I have an O guage UCS track but it doesn't seem to fit in the milk stand frame.  It is a modern one not PW.  Are they wider?  Also am not sure it works correctly, if I have all wires from the controller connected and put my 3464 box car on it will not work and shorts, if I disconnect the last wire on the left it will work.  So far  the milk car does nothing.  could this be a combo of milk car needing service and a faulty UCS track?

Your 3464 box car operates by using the magnet in the track. So it seems that part of the circuit is ok. The Milk car should have a sliding pick up shoe on each truck . When the control rails in the UCS are energized  by pressing the button, the sliders on the milk car trucks should make contact and energize the mechanism. Lionel made two styles of milk cars and they used different milk cars. The ones for the 3472 have a small magnet in the can's base.

You can check the milk car by energizing the button on the slider and ground.

With your UCS track, seems like a wire is reversed so that short occurs in the control rails when you press the button.
