Hey all, I've been lurking around here for a while, but finally decided to join! I've got a question about a postwar ZW transformer just picked up on the 'bay. The transformer was just delivered, and as I unwrapped it I noticed a distinct clunk as i turned it over. I pulled the cover off, and I found that the primary, secondary, and core laminations were all loose. Not loose as in un-tightened (not a word, I know), but loose as in there way lots of play in the parts. There's nearly 1/4" play between the laminations and the bracket, the secondary coil has huge clearance around the laminations and moves around substantially. The primary moves a bit vertically as well, but it's not as bad.

The transformer looks like it's never been opened up before, and I don't see any obvious damage. I've held and carried several ZWs before, and IIRC this amount of slop in assembly doesn't seem normal. Before I go bending mounting ears and shimming things, I'm wondering what cause this condition, and whats really the best way to deal with it. All help is definitely appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! First check to see the coil support brackets are straight and not bent. Your description makes it sound like the coil is too small for the brackets. If everything is straight and in its proper place, and there is still a lot of play, I would wonder if a coil for a model ZW was put into a case for a model ZW-R, if that is possible. A nice, clear picture would help.

I think everything looks straight (though the ears at the top of the brackets make me wonder). I was thinking sort of the same thing regarding a core replacement, but the other way around, as the core is an 'R' core. As they say though, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I got a couple. You can see on the first picture what the gap between the laminations and the support looks like. It's hard to see in the second picture because of the low light, but there is a similar gap between the secondary and the laminations.

It seems you have the newer model ZW-R coil in the transformer, and that you may have the older model coil support brackets. I'm guessing that the older coil and lamination assembly was a bit wider than the newer model; hence the different coil support brackets. You may need to shim the coil with pieces of aluminum to center it in the brackets. I do not see replacement brackets available.
