QSI Power Guard

I have some older MTH proto sound engines and was wondering if the QSI Power Guard would allow me to run these engines with the Lionel Powermaster. Usually the chopped sign waves don't work well with Proto Sound engines, but with the way the manual talks about the Power Guard, it's seems as though it allows you to run these engines with a Powermaster. Is this the case?
