Recently I purchased 3 RMT rolling stock pieces from one of the dealers I do a lot of business with.

Unfortunately the quality of these 3 items is horrible!

While I've been 100% satisfied with how the dealer has responded - they had me send the items back prepaid and replaced them.

Unfortunately the replacement items are in horrible condition.

For example, on all 3 items the roof walkway isn't glued down adequately. It won't stay glued down even after gluing it down and waiting 24 hours (walkway probably bent?). I held it down with Scotch tape.

On all 3 items, the brake wheels are broken off. If they were just loose, I could stick them in the holder, but they are broken off event with the top of the holder so they can't be attached.

On one (or 2?) cars, the couplers are inoperative; the little piece that pulls down is not attached to the axle.

On 2 of the 3 recently replaced items I received, the plastic clam shells are damaged in numerous place (maybe signs of rough handling?) - which might also explain the broken brake wheels..

I have - AGAIN - asked the dealer who sold them to me to replace them one more time.

Has anyone else experienced these problems with recent RMT rolling stock items - specifically the series of US Navy boxcars?

Thanks for any inputs.

Hi Paul,

I recently bought a still-new-in-the-box US Navy tanker from an RMT dealer (RMT-96832). I received it quickly and immediately added it to my Navy consist. Both couplers do not work like they should. Even after putting zip ties around the couplers, they don't hold for long.

I must say this tanker is beautifully rendered and decorated, but now it's just a shelf queen. Since these RMT cars are reasonably priced and I like the appearance, I'll probably swap out the trucks for some extras I have laying around.

I'm sorry to hear you've had so many problems, but it's good to hear the dealer has been committed to making this right for you. Let us know how it all ends up.

Tom

My experience has been with the ore cars.  Ordered a couple from a major dealer over a year ago.  Beautiful graphics, but wouldn't stay on the track - wheels were out of gauge and the couplers are junk.  I should have returned them, but I tried corresponding with RMT about them.  For nearly a year, I've received nothing but excuses and empty promises regarding getting new trucks - they're being worked on, the factory is closed for Chinese New Year, they'll be on the water soon, etc.  I understand that dealing with China takes time, but it's been nearly a year, which is inexcusable.

RMT's products are nicely decorated and have an attractive price point, but they've lost my business.  Never again!

Appreciate the reply - especially about the Ore cars.

It's my understanding they have new trucks for them and the new trucks should be arriving at dealers this spring.

But you're right, someone at RMT is dropping the ball on quality control checking.

The more I think about all of this, I'm probably going to cancel ALL my RMT US Navy orders (9 in total). I thought they were awesome cars, but with all these problems it's not worth the hassles.

There were some issues with trucks.  Yes, new trucks are supposed to be coming.

The new product I'm seeing is actually very, very nice at the price point.  We recently ran over 50+ ore cars together with zero operational issues.

Perhaps @RMT - Ready Made Trains will comment on when we can expect to see the replacement trucks expected for those some time ago that were defective.

@MichRR714 - There is a post (I think from RMT) somewhere here on OGR where they said this spring. Maybe do a search for RMT Ore Car Trucks.

This might be that thread: https://ogrforum.com/topic/if-...have-been-really-bad

I totally concur regarding the roof walkways!  In November, bought a special run RMT boxcar offered through a Pennsylvania hobby shop.  Luckily, I made the purchase in person as I had to open about three of them before finding one on which the roof walk was properly attached.  The walkways on the first few were wavy & buckled.

Paul...RMT received your email at 5:37pm today and was not able to immediately answer you but since you posted here on OGR, this is where I will reply.

First of all, sorry that you had problems with your first 3 cars and then again with the second three replacement cars.

I am sure that Pat's Trains did carefully inspect the replacement cars and would not have sent them if there was any damage.

If you contact me through RMT, I will make sure a perfect undamaged set of 3 US NAVY boxcars will be sent to you and they will hopefully arrive damage-free.

Let me know.

Walter/RMT

Thanks for your response.

Yes, Pat himself told me he personally inspected the 3 replacement items to ensure they were not damaged in any way so not sure how they got damaged. Maybe because the 3 items were packed tightly in an outer shipping box rather than packed with protection around the 3 boxes caused the problems? I'm not sure. I just find it strange that the same problem exists f=on all 3 pieces - the brake wheel is broke off.

In my original post you can see the RMT SKU for the 3 items.

If you can e-mail me a postpaid label (e-mail address in my profile on here), I'll be glad to send them to you for inspection. Unfortunately I no longer have the shipping box they came in (I figured after 2 shipments that box - same used for both shipments - would no longer protect them).

I do have serious concerns as I have a lot more of the US Navy boxcars on pre-order through Pat's Trains and wonder if they are going to arrive in the same poor condition.

Please let me know what you want me to do next. And thanks for taking responsibility for this problem. I know sometimes things happen. I place high importance on how things are resolved. Pat's Trains has been awesome in trying to right this. I've ordered a lot of items from him.
