My dad was an American Flyer collector… and we are seeking information on an o-Gauge set… any insight and help you can offer is much appreciated… smile…

We have an American Flyer O-Gauge set in a plain brown set box with the engine, tender, and cars in individual brown cardboard boxes. The engine is a 1680 Hudson with 4 trailing wheels.  The tender has the green decal with American Flyer Lines in yellow lettering on it. It does not have the whistle in it.  The engine and the tender, therefore, date it to 1937.  There are two 1623 two-tone green coaches and one two-tone green observation car.  Our research indicates there were 2 sets from 1937 with streamlined green cars, set #1770-RW and set #1773.  However, our set box has a number stamped on it that appears to be 1003.  Is this an uncatalogued set and how do I affix a value to it?

I am not sure if this is the best forum for my question about my o-Gauge set... if not, appreciate someone letting me know where best to post it... smile... attaching a few photos... smile...

Any help you can offer is much appreciated… thank you so much…have a great day... smile... Train_Girl

PS... I had posted this in another forum and NWL was kind enough to provide some information and let me know the Tinplate forum was the correct one for my question... smile... many thanks to NWL...

The proper place to have posted this is in the Tinplate section.  Possibly one of the moderators can move the posting.

I cannot quite make out the set number, but Flyer typically labeled their uncataloged sets using a 7000 series number, so the set number may be 7003.  Unfortunately, there is no solid data as to what the uncataloged set numbers are, so not much help can be provided by the set number.

Your set would certainly seem to be uncataloged, due to it featuring only 2 coaches and an observation car.  Set 1773, the 1937 set that featured the Hudson and passenger cars, included 3 coaches and an observation car, which is 1 more car than you have.

As for value, I am not sure that the set being an uncataloged set adds any value to the set.  I would guess that the value of the set would be lower than a standard 1773 set due to the set being minus 1 car from the standard 1773 set.  I would value the set somewhere between $400 and $800, depending on condition and condition of the boxes.  It is really difficult to tell the condition from the photos.
