Are there any operating narrow gauge railways in the US, excluding the ones now run as tourist lines or working as industrial rail or mining? My guess would be no, that the things that led to the building of narrow gauge railways basically no longer exist. Reason I was asking was I was driving on a highway up in Vermont and there was a rail line running next to the highway, and maybe because of perspective it didn't look like it was standard gauge. This was modern, well ballasted rail, and I suspect it was just perspective and my own lousy eyesight at workSmile

The WP&Y is at the present time strictly a tourist line. Took the trip the end of May.

They say they might get into the common-carrier business in the future (the line is built to high standards) but for right now it's all tourist.

If you haven't taken the trip, put it on your bucket list.

The WP&Y RR is the #1 tourist RR in the country, hauling passengers from the cruise ships. I think Trains magazine had reported recently that the company wants to reopen the northern section of the line to White Horse (now out of service) for freight business in that area.
