Are there any operating narrow gauge railways in the US, excluding the ones now run as tourist lines or working as industrial rail or mining? My guess would be no, that the things that led to the building of narrow gauge railways basically no longer exist. Reason I was asking was I was driving on a highway up in Vermont and there was a rail line running next to the highway, and maybe because of perspective it didn't look like it was standard gauge. This was modern, well ballasted rail, and I suspect it was just perspective and my own lousy eyesight at work
